Six Johnnies tallied hits across the two games
AUBURN, Ala. (Feb. 12, 2022) – The St. John's softball team (0-4) dropped a pair of games against UMass Lowell and Auburn on the second day of the Tiger Invitational on Friday.
Game One
UMass Lowell pitcher Riley White struck out seven batters across five innings of two-run work and drove in two runs at the dish, as UMass Lowell defeated St. John's, 5-2.
For the Johnnies, Natalie Alheidt went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored while Carolina Zamudio tallied six strikeouts across five innings.
Freshmen Anese Thompson and Natalie Casto drove in runs for the Red Storm.
Both teams went scoreless until the third inning, when the Red Storm grabbed the advantage. With the bases loaded following a pair of singles and a fielder's choice, Thompson poked a base knock through the left side to score Alheidt and give the Red Storm an early lead.
After a scoreless fourth, the Red Storm doubled its lead in the home half of the fifth. London Jarrard led off the frame with a single before coming around to score on a two-out Casto double to center.
UMass Lowell's Emily Tow started the top of the sixth inning with a solo shot, sparking a four-run frame for the River Hawks.
After St. John's stranded a runner in the bottom of the sixth, UMass Lowell added another run in the top of the seventh before facing just three Red Storm batters in the seventh to close out the game.
Game Two
Auburn pitcher Maddie Penta allowed just one hit and struck out seven over five innings of shutout work, as the Tigers took down the Red Storm, 9-0, in five innings.
Auburn scored single runs in the first and second frames before Casto tallied the Red Storm's lone hit in the bottom of the second with a one-out single to left.
After a scoreless third inning for both teams, Auburn hung up three runs in the fourth before scoring four runs in the fifth to close out the game, 9-0. Pinch-hitter Bri Ellis launched a two-run walk-off homer to invoke the run rule.
St. John's will take a near-two-week break before it opens up play at the USF Invitational on Feb. 25.
