St. John’s to Take on Butler in Midweek Tilt

The Red Storm looks to continue its winning ways at Butler
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb 8, 2022) – The St. John's women's basketball team goes for its second-straight win when the team faces Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Mark Minner and Johnny Soper on the call.
The Johnnies (8-15, 4-9 BIG EAST) enter the contest after topping Xavier, 96-62, to complete the season sweep and extend the winning streak against the Musketeers to 13 games. As a team, St. John's shot 51.6 percent from the floor, 52.0 percent from beyond the arc and 85.0 percent from the charity stripe. The 58 points scored by the Red Storm in the opening half were the most scored through 20 minutes all season, besting the 54 points posted against both DePaul (Dec. 19) and Georgetown (Jan. 25). The 96 points in the game were also a season high for St. John's.
Three Red Storm players scored in double figures with Kadaja Bailey leading the way with 21 points. The Long Beach, N.Y., native went 7-for-8 from the field and 7-for-7 from the foul line. Leilani Correa notched 19 points during the victory while Rayven Peeples tallied 14 points. Peeples also paced the St. John's squad with eight rebounds.
After helping the Johnnies to a 2-1 record last week, including head coach Joe Tartamella's record setting 177th win, Bailey was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday. The Long Beach, N.Y. native, averaged 16.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists for St. John's. Along with the impressive performance at Xavier, the guard posted a team-high 18 points against Villanova and scored 11 in the first meeting with the Musketeers.
On the season, Bailey is second on the team and sixth in the league, averaging 15.4 points. The senior sits behind Correa, whose 18.3 points paces the Johnnies and is second in the BIG EAST.
Butler enters the game at 1-18 overall and a winless 0-10 against league opponents. The Bulldogs' lone victory came when the team topped Evansville, 75-67, on Dec. 22. Butler will look to snap an eight-game losing streak on Wednesday with the team most recently falling to Seton Hall, 72-56, on Sunday.
As a team, Butler is averaging 58.9 points per game while allowing 80.2 this season Individually, Celena Taborn enters the contest as the nation's leader in field-goal percentage (70.3). The Sidney, Ohio, native is averaging 12.9 points a contest along with 5.4 rebounds to pace the Bulldog squad.
