INDIANAPOLIS – The St. John's women's basketball won its second straight BIG EAST road game on Wednesday night, as the team took down Butler, 73-61, at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Leilani Correa led the Johnnies (9-15, 5-9 BIG EAST) in scoring once again. The Manchester, N.J. native posted 21 points, going 8-for-16 from the floor and 3-for7 from three. She was also a perfect 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. Rayven Peeples tallied her fourth double-double this year with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Detroit native also tied her career high with five blocks during the victory over the Bulldogs (1-19, 0-11 BIG EAST).
The offense came alive early with a 10-0 run, sparked by a Correa 3-pointer that helped the Johnnies take a 12-6 advantage with 4:40 on the clock. The Red Storm shot 55.6 percent from three and 50 percent from the field during the period and led 23-15 after 10 minutes.
During the second quarter, the Johnnies struggled, allowing an 8-3 run that cut the Red Storm's lead to 35-32 with 4:33 remaining in the half. St. John's shot just 38.9 percent with Correa adding five points for the Red Storm. The Bulldogs shot 11-of-19 from the floor during the period to outscore the Red Storm 23-16, but the Johnnies held onto a slim 39-38 lead entering halftime.
After going back-and-forth to start the second half, the Johnnies added a 7-0 run, which included back-to-back buckets from Camree Clegg, to give the Red Storm 50-42 edge at the media timeout. Another rally 7-0 for the Johnnies followed and a Peeples layup extended the 57-44 Johnnie advantage with 2:25 left in the third quarter. Despite allowing a 5-1 run to end the period, St. John's held a 58-49 lead with 10 minutes to play.
Correa had the hot hand for the Red Storm in the fourth, scoring all six of the Johnnies' points before the media timeout with 4:19 to play and the team ahead 64-55. The Red Storm defense triumphed, allowing just 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting by Butler during the final frame.
Celena Taborn paced the Bulldogs with 13 points on 6-for-12 shooting. She also added 10 rebounds for her third double-double this season.
The Red Storm now leads the all-time series with the Bulldogs, 13-4, and have beaten Butler in five straight meetings. This is the first time during league play this season the Johnnies have won back-to-back games. The last time this season the Red Storm took two straight was against Temple (Nov. 17) and Yale (Nov. 21).
St. John's will return to Carnesecca Arena on Friday to host Georgetown. Tip-off on the BIG EAST Digital Network is slated for 7 p.m.
