Red Storm improves to 9-2 after convincing win
QUEENS, N.Y.- After sweeping all nine matches, the St. John's men's tennis team added a convincing 7-0 victory over Hofstra to the win column on Wednesday morning.
The Johnnies took all three doubles tilts and then captured all five finished singles matches at the USTA National Tennis Center. Axel Vila Antuna, Ignacio Garcia, Carl Gustavsson, Charlie James, Vlad Vasilache and Giuseppe De Camelis all grabbed individual wins.
In doubles play, reliable duos of Vila Antuna and Garcia and James and Ryota Kaneda both tallied victories and the initial point for St. John's (9-2).
Vila Antuna continued his stellar play in the top slot for the Red Storm. The junior tallied a comfortable win over Hofstra's Bo Catuerts, 6-3, 6-4. In the no. 2 spot, Garcia grabbed a win over Ostap Kovalenko.
Freshman standout Gustavsson registered his seventh straight singles victory with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Vincent Turina. The Stockholm, Sweden native leads the team with nine individuals wins this spring.
James recorded a straight set win over The Pride's Matthew Garcia on the no. 4 court, 6-4, 6-1.
Another strong freshman, Vasilache logged another win in a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Josh Reynolds.
De Camelis squeezed by in the first set, 7-5, before a decisive 6-0 second set moved him past Kaita Odani.
In its next outing, the Red Storm will take on Boston University on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the USTA National Tennis Center.
