MIAMI (March 2, 2022) – The St. John's softball team (2-10) fell to Florida International in two games on Wednesday.
Game One
FIU used a four run fourth inning to secure a 5-1 victory over the Red Storm in the opening game of Wednesday's twin bill.
Meisha Murray went 2-for-2 with a run scored for her third multi-hit game of the season.
For the Panthers, Kendahl Dunford recorded 12 strikeouts across seven innings of play.
Angela Saric threw two innings of scoreless relief.
FIU got the early lead in the first inning when Kayla Whitehead scored on a Brittany Phillips sac fly. The four insurance runs came in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on second and third, Venessa Gallegos hit a two-bagger to bring in two runs before coming home herself on Makayla Garcia double. Garcia scored on a throwing error.
St. John's narrowed its deficit in the sixth, as Murray singled to lead off the frame before stealing second, stealing third and scoring on an error by the second baseman.
Game Two
Despite holding FIU scoreless over the final six frames, St. John's was unable to close the gap, dropping a 2-1 decision to close out Wednesday's doubleheader.
London Jarrard singled twice and drove in a run for her fourth multi-hit game of the year. Anna Freveletti went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Melanie Santos also added a base-knock.
Hannah Mearns recorded six innings of two-run work in the circle.
After St. John's left a runner on base in the top of the first, back-to-back run scoring hits in the home half from Phillips and Madison Lewis gave FIU an early 2-0 lead.
St. John's pulled within one in the third, as Freveletti smacked a one-out double before Jarrard brought her home two batters later with a single to left center.
Mearns retired 10 straight FIU batters between the third and sixth innings, but St. John's couldn't answer offensively as FIU held on to a 2-1 lead.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Saturday as it takes on UMBC and Morgan State at the Retriever Round Robin.
