Red Storm Travels to UMBC for Retriever Round Robin

St. John’s will face UMBC and Morgan State this weekend
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 4, 2022) – The St. John's softball team will finish out its spring break trip with a visit to Maryland for the Retriever Round Robin.
The Red Storm will take on UMBC on Saturday at noon before facing Morgan State at 2 p.m. The following day, St. John's will open play against the Bears at 10 a.m. before taking on the host Retrievers at noon. Live Stats will be available on UMBC's website.
St. John's went 0-4 in doubleheaders at Florida Atlantic and Florida International this week. In the second game against FAU, Anna Freveletti and Natalie Casto each recorded their first career double while Meisha Murray singled. Erin Brown entered the circle for the Red Storm in the bottom of the fifth and struck out four Owls in 2.0 innings of one-run work.
During the first game at FIU, Murray went 2-for-2 with a run scored for her third multi-hit game of the season. Angela Saric threw two innings of scoreless relief. In the second half of the twin bill, London Jarrard singled twice and drove in a run for her fourth multi-hit game of the year. Freveletti went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Hannah Mearns recorded six innings of two- run work in the circle.
Jarrard is the reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week and leads the team in batting average with a .361 clip. She also leads the team in hits (13) and RBIs (6).
Last season, the Retrievers went 25-13 and won the league championship before falling in the NCAA Regional in Tucson. UMBC returns NFCA First Team All-Region member Courtney Coppersmith. The pitching staff is completed by Kya Matter, the reigning AE Pitcher and Rookie of the Week. This season, the Retrievers are 4-4 with victories against Georgetown, Saint Joseph's and Coppin State.
UMBC won its first meeting against the Red Storm in 2002 before the Johnnies picked up a win against the Retrievers in 2012.
Like the Retrievers, the Bears won their conference championship and finished with a 24-17 record. Sisters Aliya Ewell and Mia Ewell were named to the Preseason All-MEAC team. This season, the sisters both sport .286 batting averages. This season, the Bears are 3-5 with its wins coming against Hampton and Wagner.
