St. John’s Falls to Providence, 3-1

Red Storm returns to action Tuesday at Manhattan
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 20, 2022) – Tori Grifone fanned eight batters in 6.1 innings of one-run work to lead Providence to a 3-1 victory over St. John's on Sunday afternoon.
Amy Mallah went 2-for-4 at the plate and recorded her first career triple while Melanie Santos tallied a hit and her third RBI of the weekend. Natalie Casto added a double.
Carolina Zamudio pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief for St. John's and notched two strikeouts.
Fresh out of the dugout, St. John's was able to convert one hit into a run in the first inning. With bases loaded after two walks and a Mallah single, Santos made contact to bring home Meisha Murray.
The Friars responded in the bottom of the first when Tiana Wren smacked a two-RBI double with bases loaded to quickly erase the St. John's lead.
St. John's put runners in scoring position in both the second and third innings, but could not push across a run.
Providence bumped its lead to three in the bottom of the fourth after Micaela Abbatine doubled before coming home on a Lauren Nunez single.
In the top of the fifth, Mallah tripled to right center with two outs, but could not get all the way around.
The final opportunity for the Johnnies came in the top of the sixth when Casto doubled off the wall, but failed to advance any farther.
St. John's will return to action on Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Manhattan in the Bronx.
