St. John’s Drops Contest Against Manhattan, 2-0

Red Storm returns to action Friday at Villanova
BRONX, N.Y. (March 22, 2022) –St. John's dropped its midweek battle with Manhattan, 2-0, at Gaelic Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Hannah Mearns recorded 4.0 innings of work in the circle for the Red Storm (5-20) and tallied four strikeouts. The sophomore retired seven straight batters during the outing and did not give up a walk during her appearance. Carolina Zamudio pitched 2.0 innings of scoreless relief as the Mexico City native struck out three batters and did not allow a hit during her outing.
Madison Wallace went 1-for-3 from the batter's box and recorded her first career double. Four other Red Storm players added hits for the Johnnie squad with Natalie Casto extending her three-game hitting streak.
Ava Metzger pitched a complete game for the Jaspers (5-12). The freshman allowed five hits and struck out nine batters. Offensively, Megan Hundland led the way for Manhattan with a pair of home runs.
Manhattan got on the board in the second inning after a solo blast from Hedlund broke open the stalemate. The sophomore blasted her second dinger of the day in the fourth inning to give the Jaspers the 2-0 edge.
Despite the Red Storm having runners in scoring position in the second, fourth and fifth innings, the offense went cold as the squad could not bring a runner home.
St. John's will be back in action on Friday when the team begins a series with reigning BIG EAST Champion Villanova at 3 p.m. The road game will be streamed on FloSports.
