Johnnies travel to Connecticut for their lone midweek contest
QUEENS, N.Y- The St. John's lacrosse team heads to Fairfield on Tuesday for a midweek tilt at 7 p.m. The contest will be streamed on the Stags Sports Network, as J.J. Duke will have the call from Rafferty Stadium.
In its last contest, the Red Storm fell at RV Dartmouth, 17-10, on Saturday afternoon. Jonathan Huber tied a career-high in points recording a tally on seven of the Johnnies 10 goals.
Huber is once again leading the way for the Red Storm attack. The redshirt senior has been firing on all cylinders, as he has tallied 18 goals and four assists through seven games. In his last outing, the attackman fired in four goals and registered a career-high three assists in the losing effort at Dartmouth. He currently averages 2.57 goals per outing, which ranks sixth in the BIG EAST and 53rd in NCAA Division I.
The attackman is continuing to etch himself in the St. John's lacrosse record books. After Saturday's seven-point performance, the Great River, N.Y., native moved to 11th all-time in goals (73) and 18th in points (92). The veteran sits just one goal shy of cracking the top-10 in program history.
Kaden Quirk was recognized on Monday as he was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week by the conference office. On Saturday, the rookie netminder set a new season-high 15 saves, corralled eight groundballs and notched just the second goalie assist by a St. John's player since 2018, as time expired in the first half. On the year, the true freshman has started all seven contests in goal for the Red Storm. Quirk has logged 70 saves on the year, including 10 or more in each of his last four appearances.
Another stellar freshman, Brian Kelly has quickly made an impact as he ranks second on the team with 21 points (10 G, 11 A) on the season. The attackman currently averages 3.0 points per contest and ranks tied for eighth in the country among all NCAA freshman as of games played through March 20. On March 19, Kelly kept a keen eye for open teammates, as he dished out a season-high three assists in the loss at Dartmouth.
These two programs will meet for the first time in 13 years on Tuesday evening. The all-time series is split 3-3 between the two schools. During St. John's inaugural season in 1981, the Red Storm played its sixth-ever game as a program contest against Fairfield in Queens, a 17-6 victory over the Stags on April 2.
Fairfield will host the Red Storm riding a three-game winning streak. The Stags hold a 5-3 record on the year and most recently defeated a BIG EAST opponent in Providence, 15-11, on Saturday. Statistically, Fairfield pours in 14.1 goals per outing, which ranks 17th nationally. The offense is led by the CAA's leading goal scorer Taylor Strough. The senior attackman has found the back of the twine 28 times this season and added five helpers. He notched a season-high seven-point performance in Saturday's victory over the Friars.
Following the midweek battle, the Johnnies will make their way to the Sunshine State to face Jacksonville on Saturday at 12 p.m.
