The Johnnies finish seventh at the two-day tournament
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (March 8, 2022) – St. John's men's golf finished its final two rounds of the Ross Collegiate Classic at Mid Pines Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon as the team placed seventh out of 17 teams.
"The team played great today," said head coach Mal Galletta. "We made a great run towards a top-5 finish, but fell a little short. We dug ourselves a big hole with our first round score, but we got better each of the next two rounds. That's a big boost for our team as we head into the remainder of our spring season."
The Johnnies closed out the second round with a score of 299 and showed improvements in the final round, carding a 282 to finish with a final three-round score of 891 (+27). St. John's paced the field with four eagles during its tournament run.
Peicheng Chen led the way for the Red Storm, shooting a combined 218 to tie for 13th place. The stellar freshman carded a 78 in the second round and finished strong with a 67 during the final round of the day.
Tyler Gerbavsits closed out the day with a 77 in round two and a 69 in round three to come away tied for 28th. Gage Wolfle posted a 73 and a 75 during the final two rounds for a three-day total of 227 and a tie for 44th place.
Jack Simon and Ryan Rittberger tied for 49th place with a three-round combined score of 235.
Individually, Thomas Stafford logged a 234 for the event to tie for 76th place. Joseph Busiello registered a 244 for the tournament to finish tied for 98th.
Up next, the Johnnies will return to the Empire State to take part in the Shark Invitational hosted by LIU. The two-day event is slated for Apr. 11-12.
