Preliminary rounds of the women’s track event will be held at DaSilva Memorial Field
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field program is set to host the opening two rounds of the 47th Colgate Women's Games at DaSilva Memorial Field on Sunday, April 3 and Sunday, April 10.
"It is truly an honor and privilege for St. John's to play a part of and host the prestigious Colgate Women's Games in 2022 – one of the premier sporting events in the country," said St. John's Director of Athletics Mike Cragg. "Hosting the track and field competition provides opportunities for women to showcase their skills and competitive spirit – which is fully in tune with our day-to-day mission as an athletic department featuring 17 sports and over 340 student-athletes. We can't wait to cheer on all of the competitors in Queens."
The event hosts hundreds of female track athletes from elementary school through college age that will compete for scholarships as well as other awards.
Athletes will race in the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes along with the 800 and 1,500-meter runs. The high jump and shot put events will also be featured during the meet.
St. John's shares a deep connection with the competition as it was founded by law school graduate Fred Thompson in 1974. Thompson later received a Medal of Honor from the university for his lifetime of empowerment and advocacy of women's athletics.
The Colgate Women's Games is renowned for its impact on the lives of competitors, both on and off the track. The event is credited with producing nearly 30 track champions at varying levels, including the Olympics.
"Colgate Women's Games is an incubator for developing athletic talent with a proven track record of empowering girls to believe in their ability to achieve lifelong goals on the track and off," said Meet Director Cheryl Toussaint in an interview with Yahoo. "The sport taught me discipline, perseverance and self-determination. My story and the lives of many of the young women who have found a passion for athletics and education through Colgate Women's Games show the transformative power that track and field can have on people."
The event is free to enter and same-day registration is available for all competitors for both rounds on April 3 and 10. For more information on the Colgate Women's Games, please visit ColgateWomensGames.com.
