St. John’s Finishes Competition at Shark Invitational

Peicheng Chen ties for fourth place at the 54-hole event
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The St. John's men's golf team finished tied for third at the Shark Invitational at the Brookville Country Club on Tuesday.
As a team, the Red Storm shot a 303 during the final day of competition to post a 54-hole total of 880. The Johnnies finished locked in a tie with Army West Point. Tournament host LIU took home the team title with a combined 858. Southern Illinois came into the clubhouse in second place as the Salukis finished a stroke behind the Sharks, carding an 859 for the event,
Leading the way for the Johnnies was Peicheng Chen as the freshman shot a 73 for the day to finish with a 214 for the event. Chen shot 2-under par on the back nine including a birdie on 18. Jack Simon posted a top-10 finish as the senior carded a 78 in the third round to finish with a combined 218.
Tyler Gerbavsits finished locked in a tie for 15th place as the senior posted a 76 for the final round and a 221 for the tournament. Ryan Rittberger tied for 28th place when he recorded a 76 on Tuesday to finish with a 229 for the tournament. Gage Wolfle rounded out the team scoring as the Sewell, N.J., native shot an 80 in the third round to tie for 42nd and finish with a two-day total of 234.
Individually, Joseph Busiello carded his lowest round of the tournament as the senior shot a 73 to close out the tournament with a two-day total of 224. One of four players to post an eagle at the tournament, Busiello tied for 23rd place and tied for second among the individuals competing at the event. Doug Beney shot an 82 in his final round, placing the sophomore tied for 42nd with a 54-hole total of 234. Thomas Stafford carded a 76 during the final round to finish in a tie for 53rd place with a combined 242 at the event.
St. John's will be back in action when the team heads to Villanova, Pa., for the Wildcat Invitational. The Red Storm will tee off from the two-day event at the Radnor Valley Country Club on April 18.
