CHICAGO (April 15, 2022) – The St. John's softball team fell to DePaul in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium.
GAME ONE
The Red Storm (10-29, 4-13 BIG EAST) dropped the series opener to the Blue Demons (19-19, 8-6 BIG EAST), 9-1, in just six innings.
Natalie Alheidt went 1-for-2 at the plate as the junior sent a homer to center field for Johnnies' lone run.
Hannah Mearns fell to 3-14 with the loss after pitching her ninth complete game this season. The Binghamton University transfer fanned eight batters despite allowing nine runs on 12 hits.
Sarah Lehman dominated the circle for DePaul, pitching a complete game to move to 9-5 on the year. The Iowa transfer struck out 10 batters and allowed just one run on three hits.
Lehman started the day by taking down the Red Storm lineup in order. Mearns made her way to the circle and struck out the first two batters before back-to-back homers from Brooke Johnson and Anna Wohlers gave DePaul the early 2-0 lead. Mearns hit trouble again in the following frame when the Blue Demons converted three runs on three hits to hold the 5-0 edge heading to the third.
The Johnnies looked to rally with Alheidt sending a dinger to over the center field fence to put the Johnnies on the board, but back-to- back strikeouts ended the Red Storm's at bat.
DePaul tacked on two more runs in the home half of the inning before two scoreless innings on both sides.
The Johnnies left runners in scoring position in the top of the sixth before Johnson sent a long ball to centerfield to plate two and Wohlers followed with a solo homer, to close out the 9-1 loss for St. John's.
GAME TWO
The Johnnies offensive woes continued in the latter half of the twin bill as St. John's fell to DePaul, 14-0, in five innings.
DePaul pitcher Erin Hocker allowed just three hits and struck out six batters over five innings of shutout work. Carolina Zamudio and Angela Saric each pitched 2.0 innings for the Red Storm with Zamudio falling to 4-12 this season with the loss.
Johnson tallied her third homer on the day in the first inning, giving the Blue Demons the early 1-0 edge. In the top of the second, St. John's offense came alive with singles from Anese Thompson and Anna Freveletti. However, Hocker recorded her second strikeout of the game to end the inning unharmed.
Zamudio struggled in the bottom of the second when a double and a single by the Blue Demon's brought in a run. A walk and a single loaded the bases before a crucial strikeout added an out to the board. A single, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly all scored runs for the opposition, giving the Blue Demons a 5-0 advantage.
Kate Polucha tacked on another run in the bottom of the third as the graduate student powered a homer over the left field fence to put the Blue Demons up, 6-0. The Red Storm went to the bullpen, bringing in Saric to control the hot Blue Demon offense. The senior did not allow a run in the third, but DePaul knocked in three runs in the bottom of the fourth before the game was delayed due to inclement weather. When play resumed, the Blue Demons tacked on five more runs to take a 14-0 edge.
Looking to extend the game, Meisha Murray sent a two-out single to centerfield before stealing second. The senior advanced to third on an error and Madison Wallace drew a walk, putting runners on the corners with London Jarrard at the plate. The freshman popped out to the Blue Demon's third baseman, marking the end of the game
St. John's and DePaul will play the series finale on Saturday at 1 p.m. The contest will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
