St. John’s Drops BIG EAST Championship Match to DePaul, 4-2

Red Storm finish runner-up for second straight year
CAYCE S.C.- The St. John's men's tennis team fell to second-seeded DePaul in the 2022 BIG EAST Championship match on Sunday morning, 4-2.
DePaul edged the top-seeded Red Storm in doubles and won three of the five completed singles matches, to capture its second straight conference championship.
In doubles play, the prolific duo of Axel Vila Antuna and Ignacio Garcia started the contest off with a 6-3 victory over DePaul's top-pairing Marino Jakic and Vito Tonejc. The Blue Demons notched the next win to pull even. In the deciding partner match, Dylan Loru and Ryota Kaneda battled hard, but ultimately fell to Jona Gitschel and Leon Huck, 7-5, giving DePaul the advantage headed into singles competition.
In singles play, the experienced veteran Garcia captured the point after a straight set win on the no. 4 court, to make it 1-1. The redshirt senior finishes the 2022 campaign with a team-high of 15 singles wins.
After DePaul claimed the no. 1 court, it was Kaneda that pulled the Johnnies back even, 2-2. The crafty freshman registered a convincing victory over the Blue Demons Tripp Tuff, 6-4, 6-1.
DePaul's Matteo Iaquinto defeated Vlad Vasilache to jump back in front, 3-2. The deciding match came down to the no. 2 court, where Carl Gustavsson and Jakic went back-and-forth in a contested tilt. In the first set, the two battled their way to a tiebreak before the Blue Demon freshman won six consecutive points to claim a 7-6 (6) lead. In the second set, Gustavsson continued to fight, the talented freshman won a crucial game to pull within two. Jakic utilize his serve to win the match, 6-3, and clinch the BIG EAST crown for DePaul.
Yaron Guberman was on the brink of a singles victory, holding a 6-4, 5-2 advantage before his contest was declared unfinished.
The Red Storm close out the 2022 season with a 17-6 overall record and advanced to the BIG EAST title match for the third consecutive tournament.
