St. John’s Drops Midweek Contest to Marist, 7-2

Tate Ballestero hit his third home run of the season on Tuesday
POMONA, N.Y.- The St. John's baseball team fell to Marist, 7-2, at Clover Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Tate Ballestero hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth inning.
Jackson Tucker and Kevin Michaels each recorded two-hit outings against the Red Foxes. Michaels went 2-for-4 while Tucker added a run scored in a 2-for-5 effort at the plate.
Despite allowing a single earned run, Joe Mascio suffered his first loss of the season for St. John's (17-27-1)
The Red Foxes (25-14) struck first in the top of the second, pushing one run across to lead, 1-0. Brian Hart led off the frame with a double to right center before scoring on a Niko Amory single through the left side of the infield.
After both sides held firm in the third and fourth innings, Marist extended its advantage to 3-0 in the top of the fifth. Gavin Noriega laced a double that bounced over the short left-field wall to score the second run of the evening. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Noriega jogged home on a sacrifice fly by Brian Hart to give the Red Foxes a three-run edge.
The Johnnies responded with two of their own in the bottom of the fifth when Ballestero launched a ball over the bleachers in right center to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.
Marist answered with four in the top of the sixth to restore its multi-run lead, 7-2. With runners on second and third and one out, Marco Ali singled to right center to send both runners home. A sac fly and a wild pitch gave the Red Foxes their third and fourth runs of the frame, respectively, and ballooned the visitors' lead to five.
The Red Foxes shut out the Red Storm over the final three innings of the game to secure the victory on Tuesday night.
St. John's will return to the diamond on Friday when it travels to South Orange, N.J., to take on BIG EAST rival Seton Hall. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
