The event raised $80,000 for all 17 Red Storm athletic programs
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's Athletic Department hosted its second-annual Johnnies Golf Classic at the Cherry Valley Club on Monday.
Red Storm coaches, student-athletes and staff were joined by alumni and supporters of the program for breakfast, a day on the links, cocktail hour and dinner reception in Garden City, N.Y.
To cap off the day, University President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., Director of Athletics Mike Cragg and graduate student men's golfer Tyler Gerbavsits addressed the crowd at the dinner reception.
"By participating in Division I athletics at a place like St. John's, our student-athletes learn about life," said Shanley. "They learn things about themselves, they learn how to compete, they learn how to push themselves and become better people."
"The hard-work and commitment by our student-athletes can never be taken for granted," said Cragg. "The commitment in the classroom, in the community, to excel [athletically] and to pursue championships. That's what St. John's is about."
In total, event helped raise over $80,000 to support the academic and athletic success of all 17 St. John's athletic programs. Donations are still being accepted on the Red & White Club website.
"My experience at St. John's has far exceeded my expectations," Gerbavsits said. "The friendships, opportunities, challenges, the competition and the community have played a huge role in who I am today."
