QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team returns to Belson Stadium for a Friday night showdown with Navy. The first-ever meeting between the programs is slated for 8 p.m. on ESPN3.
The match will be the second half of a doubleheader with the St. John's men's soccer team, who will take on Lehigh at 5 p.m.
The Red Storm returns home following a 2-2 draw at Columbia on Sunday afternoon. Nicole Gordon posted her second goal of the season during the 10th minute of action. Isabelle Aviza hit Jessica Garziano with the dish before a long ball by the midfielder landed at Gordon's feet. The Amityville, N.Y., native flicked the ball over the Lions' keeper to give the Johnnies the 1-0 lead.
Brooke Boyd notched her first tally of the season. Garziano once again played a role in the score as she sent a free kick towards the Columbia net, and Boyd powered a header into the back of the net for the score just before the end of the first.
Leading 2-0 at the break, the Red Storm looked to maintain its advantage but goals by Columbia in the 59th and 73rd minutes, respectfully, resulted in the 2-2 draw.
Garziano was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for a second straight week. The Melville, N.Y., native continues to pace the Johnnies in points with seven for the year. She scored two goals in as many games to open her senior campaign, finding the back of the net in each of the first two matches against Saint Joseph's and NJIT, respectively. She currently leads the conference with three assists for the year, which ranks 14th nationally.
Navy comes to Queens at 2-1-2 this season, having played all five matches at home. The team was selected as the Patriot League favorites for 2022 with Katie Herrmann and Alexa Riddle being named to the Patriot League Preseason All-League Team.
Carin Gabarra is in her 30th season at the helm for the Mids, boasting a 364-165-60 record at Navy. The veteran leader of the Navy squad has earned Patriot League Coach of the Year honors five times over the course of her career, most recently following the 2020-21 season.
Ashley Yi leads the Mids with two goals this year while Tori Liesen paces the squad with five points. Mattie Gallagher has started four matches in the net for Navy, allowing two goals while tallying 14 saves.
St. John's returns to Belson Stadium for a Monday afternoon match as the squad welcomes Central Connecticut State. Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m. on FloSports.
