QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team will begin a three-match road swing with a game at Ulrich Sports Complex as the team faces off against Lehigh on Sunday. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Red Storm topped Central Connecticut State, 3-0, in the team's last outing. Goalkeeper Gina Muzi posted her second straight shutout to move to 3-1-1 for the year. She recorded one save during her 90 minutes of work.
Ava Collins logged her first collegiate brace during the triumph over CCSU. The junior scored on her first attempt of the match in the seventh minute. Melina Couzis threaded a pass to Nicole Gordon before the senior found Collins in the box. The Auckland, New Zealand, native sent a blast to the top right corner of the net for the first score of the match. Collins then buried her second goal into the bottom of the net in the 62nd minute for her final tally of the match.
Kayla Mesaros scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career when she powered the ball past the Blue Devils' keeper in the 75th minute. The fifth-year midfielder also added an assist on the second goal by Collins.
Through six games this season, eight Red Storm players have tallied goals while six have added assists. Jessica Garziano, Gordon and Collins post two goals apiece. Garziano also paces the Red and White with three assists and seven points during her senior campaign.
Lehigh enters Sunday's matinee with a 1-3-1 overall record and a 0-2 mark at home. The Mountain Hawks topped Siena, 2-1, in their last outing. Sophia Lis and Corinne Lyght scored against the Saints with Lyght netting the game-winning shot. The sophomore leads Lehigh with two goals this year. Between the pipes, Maggie Ousouljoglou has made five appearances with four starts. The Bridgewater, N.J., native is 1-2-1 during her freshman campaign, making 17 saves while allowing 10 goals.
Lauren Calabrese is in her first season at the helm for the Mountain Hawks, being named the program's fifth head coach in January. She previously spent the last six seasons on the sidelines for Lehigh as an associate head coach.
The match will be the third meeting all-time between the programs. Lehigh topped the Johnnies, 2-1, during the first-ever meeting in 2017 while the Red Storm shutout the Mountain Hawks, 4-0, last year. During the 2021 matchup, current Johnnies Brooke Boyd, Michelle Money and Collins each tallied a goal for St. John's.
The Red Storm remains on the road for a Saturday showdown with Cornell at Berman Field. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
