Red Storm returns to action with match at Cornell on Saturday
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A late goal by Lehigh in the 89th minute sunk St. John's as the women's soccer team fell, 1-0, at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Goalkeeper Gina Muzi moves to 3-2-1 with the loss. The Johnnies' (3-2-2) netminder faced nine shots while logging five saves. Lehigh (2-3-1) keeper Maggie Ousouljoglou picked up the win to move to 2-2-1 in 2022. The freshman made four saves during the match.
Ava Collins powered the Johnnie offense to start, logging a pair of shots within the first five minutes. However, the offense for the Red Storm stalled following Collins' attempts. Kayla Mesaros and Molly McGlame each fired a shot on target, forcing the Mountain Hawks keeper to make a pair of saves, leaving the match scoreless.
Defensively in the first half, Muzi faced a pair of shots, the first resulting in a save while the second attempt by Corinne Lyght was just high. Despite outshooting Lehigh 4-2 in the first period, the teams went back to the locker room locked in a scoreless battle.
In the second half, Lehigh controlled the offense, outshooting the Red Storm, 7-3. After the Johnnies first shot attempt of the period went high, the Mountain Hawks pelted the Johnnie defense in the 69th minute as a pair of shots were stopped in quick succession, including a save by Muzi. Jailene DeJesus sent a couple balls towards the goal but did not find the back of the net. Ousouljoglou collected a save on a DeJesus attempt in the 75th minute, and the freshman midfielder sent a shot wide of the mark in the 87th minute.
A corner kick by Lehigh found the Mountain Hawks' Erin Keefe in the 89th minute. The Basking Ridge, N.J., native sent a high ball into the back of the net with 47 seconds remaining in the match, sealing the heartbreaking 1-0 defeat for the Red Storm.
The Johnnies remain on the road for a match at Cornell on Saturday. Kick-off from Berman Field is slated for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
