Towering right-hander played for St. John’s from 2017-19
QUEENS, N.Y. – A standout reliever with the Red Storm from 2017-19, Gavin Hollowell has earned a Major League call-up with the Colorado Rockies, the organization announced on Sunday.
Â
Hollowell has joined the Rockies in Chicago, where they will close a three-game set with the Cubs on Sunday afternoon.
Â
When he makes his Major League debut, Hollowell will become the 10th St. John's draft pick to appear in The Show since 2005.Â
Â
The Skillman, N.J., native had been enjoying a stellar season for the Hartford Yard Goats, the organization's Double-A affiliate. In 42 relief appearances, Hollowell went 4-2 with 3.14 ERA and 16 saves in 18 opportunities. In 48.2 frames, he struck out 64 batters and surrendered only 14 walks while holding opponents to .179 batting average and compiling a 0.90 WHIP.
Â
Last season with the Fresno Grizzlies, the 6-foot-7 right-hander went 2-0 with four saves in as many opportunities, turning in a 2.45 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. Opponents hit just .185 off Hollowell during his stint in Single-A.
Â
Hollowell was similarly impressive during his debut professional season in 2019, going 3-0 with a 2.89 ERA and seven saves for the Grand Junction Pioneers. Â
Â
Hollowell was taken in the sixth round, 123rd overall, by the Rockies in the 2019 MLB Draft following a season during which he earned First Team All-BIG EAST. After a slow start to his final collegiate season, Hollowell went 1-0 with a 2.05 ERA and eight saves in his last 12 appearances for the Red Storm.Â
Â
A Second Team All-BIG EAST pick as a sophomore in 2018, Hollowell helped St. John's win its conference-record ninth league title by going 3-0 with five saves and a 2.16 ERA in 25 relief appearances. Opponents hit just .138 off Hollowell during his second collegiate campaign. Excluding a March 30 outing at Minnesota that featured five earned runs, Hollowell posted a 0.84 ERA for the remainder of the season.
Â
Hollowell burst onto the scene as a freshman, compiling a team-best 1.65 ERA for a Johnnies squad that won 42 games and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. He led the team with three saves and 37 strikeouts in 32.2 innings pitched.
