Isabelle Aviza sinks second-straight game-winner in Johnnies triumph over Seton Hall
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's women's soccer posted its second-straight shutout as the team triumphed over Seton Hall, 1-0, at Belson Stadium on Thursday night.
Isabelle Aviza found the back of the net in the 28th minute following a header by Nicole Gordon and a corner by Jessica Garziano. The goal marked the forward's second tally of the year and eighth of her career. The assists were Gordon and Garziano's second and fourth helpers of the season, respectively.
Gina Muzi got the start between the pipes for the Red Storm (5-3-3, 2-1-0 BIG EAST), making one stop in her 90 minutes of play. The clean sheet was the fifth of the season for the Delafield, Wis., native. Grace Gordon made the start in goal for Seton Hall (4-5-2, 0-3-0 BIG EAST) as she recorded six saves.
As a team, the Johnnies outshot the Pirates 11-3, with six attempts landing on target. Corner kicks also favored the Red Storm, 7-2.
Muzi made her only stop of the game when Maille McDermott sent a blast towards the bottom of the net. It was the lone shot for Seton Hall as the Red Storm pelted the Pirate net with nine shots in the opening half.
Ava Collins sent a header into the goal, but a save by the Pirates Gordon made a stop to force a St. John's corner kick. Garziano took the corner and found N. Gordon in the box, who sent a header to Aviza. The Medway, Mass., native powered the ball past the keeper for the goal in the 28th minute.
The Red Storm continued to attack on offense, forcing G. Gordon to make three more saves in the half, before the teams went into the locker room with the Red and White holding the 1-0 advantage.
Coming out of the break, Aviza and Garziano logged shots in the 53rd and 65th minute, respectively. The Pirates added looks in the 57th and 76th minutes but were unable to find the back of the net. The Johnnies did not allow a shot following attempt, completing the second-straight shutout for the Red Storm.
St. John's will hit the road for a BIG EAST battle at Villanova on Sunday. Kick-off from the Higgins Soccer Complex is slated for 2 p.m.
