Red Storm look to build off Sunday’s victory over Connecticut, 1-0, as BIG EAST play continues
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team welcomes Seton Hall to Belson Stadium on Thursday night. Kick-off from the conference clash is slated for 7 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
The Red Storm enters the contest at 4-3-3 for the year with a 1-1-0 mark in league play. The Johnnies opened BIG EAST action with a 1-0 loss at then-ranked No. 23 Georgetown. The team bounced back in their conference home opener, taking down Connecticut 1-0 last Sunday.
During the victory over the Huskies, Isabelle Aviza scored the game-winning goal in the 14th minute. Melina Couzis found the senior at the top of the box and the forward blasted a shot past the diving UConn netminder into the bottom right corner of the net.
This season, nine different Johnnies have found the back of the net. Ava Collins, Nicole Gordon and Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree Jessica Garziano post two goals apiece to lead the way. Garziano paces the Red Storm squad with three assists and seven points.
In net, Gina Muzi has made 10 starts between the pipes, and the Red Storm goalkeeper has allowed just eight goals, while racking up 28 saves. So far this season, the senior netminder has four clean sheets under her belt with two in the last four matches.
Seton Hall comes to Queens at 4-4-2 with a winless 0-2-0 mark in conference play. The Pirates dropped matches to Providence and Villanova last week to open their BIG EAST slate. This season, Seton Hall has outscored its opponents, 8-6, while averaging 0.80 goals per game. Defensively, the squad has logged 38 stops for a .864 save percentage.
Individually, Natalie Tavana paces the squad with seven points this year. The Middletown, Conn., native tallied two goals and three assists while starting all 10 matches for the Pirates. Grace Gordon has seen the bulk of the work in goal for Seton Hall as the senior boasts a 3-3-1 record with five goals allowed and 35 saves.
Josh Osit is in his first season at the helm for the Pirates. Just the fifth head coach in the 28-year history of Seton Hall women's soccer, Osit previously served as an assistant coach at Columbia and Rutgers.
St. John's leads the series with the Pirates 21-6-1 while outscoring Seton Hall 42-19. The Red Storm has topped the Pirates in 10 of the last 11 meetings between the programs. Last season, current Volunteer Assistant Coach Maia Cabrera notched the game-winner in the 1-0 triumph in South Orange, N.J. Garziano and Angelina Scoma recorded assists on the victory-clinching tally.
Following the home tilt, St. John's hit the road for a BIG EAST battle at Villanova on Sunday. Kick-off from the Higgins Soccer Complex is slated for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
