The Red Storm advanced to 14-1 overall and 5-1 in league competition with a 71-52 victory over Xavier on Sunday. The win marked the 100th BIG EAST victory for Head Coach Joe Tartamella and places the Johnnies at third in the league standings.
Jayla Everett served as the catalyst for Sunday's bounce back win over the Musketeers, going for 26 points, the most by a Red Storm player this season. The redshirt senior went 8-for-11 from the field and 8-for-10 from the charity stripe in a dominant effort.
On the season, the shooting guard leads the team and ranks top-five in the BIG EAST in scoring with 17.3 points per game. On Monday, the St. Louis, Mo., native garnered her fourth BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod of the season.
Jillian Archer continues to emerge as a prominent force on the interior as the graduate student is averaging 14.0 rebounds over the last three games. On Sunday, the forward logged her third double-double of the year, recording 16 points and 13 boards against Xavier.
Wednesday's match-up features two stout defensive sides. UConn and St. John's both rank in the top-three of BIG EAST squad in field goal percentage defense, three-point field goal percentage defense, rebounding margin and blocked shots. Opponents have shot less than 37 percent from the floor against the Huskies and the Johnnies.
Connecticut ranks in the top-five in both national polls and boasts a 13-2 record heading into Wednesday's tilt. UConn's last game scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 8 against DePaul was postponed. The Huskies were under the BIG EAST minimum of seven scholarship student-athletes. The last time out, UConn dominated Xavier on the road, 73-37, on Jan. 5.
The Huskies lead the nation in field goal percentage, cashing in on 51.7 percent of opportunities from the floor. Point guard Nika Muhl serves as the floor general and leads the nation in assists with 9.3 per outing.
The Huskies took both meetings last season and have won nine straight against the Red Storm. The last St. John's victory came on Feb. 18, 2012, when current Assistant Coach Shenneika Smith drained a game-winning three-pointer to shock then-no. 2 UConn, 57-56, snapping the Huskies 99-game home winning streak.
Following the meeting with UConn, the Red Storm will face its second nationally-ranked opponent of the week, when it travels to No. 25 Villanova on Saturday at 2 p.m.
