Red Storm to hit the road on Saturday to face No. 25 Villanova
ELMONT, N.Y.- The RV/RV St. John's women's basketball team fell to No. 4 UConn, 82-52, at UBS Arena on Wednesday night.
The conference tilt was the first-ever women's college basketball game played at UBS Arena, home of the New York Islanders.
UConn (14-2, 7-0 BIG EAST) was led by a balanced attack as four Huskies scored 14 points or more. Lou Lopez Senchal scored a game-high 20 points and shot 4-of-5 from beyond-the-arc. Dorka Juhasz recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds at UBS Arena.
Kadaja Bailey spearheaded the Johnnies' offensive efforts, finishing with 17 points, including 14 in the second half. The redshirt senior was efficient shooting 6-of-8 from field-goal range.
Danielle Patterson matched a season-high with 10 points on the evening. The forward played 25 minutes off the bench, the most she has all year, and provided energy on both ends of the floor for St. John's (14-2, 5-2 BIG EAST).
Jayla Everett finished in double-figures with 10 points, as she has in every game this season. Rayven Peeples anchored the Red Storm in the rebounding department, pulling down 11 boards.
In the opening frame, Everett scored eight of the first nine points for St. John's as the Red Storm stayed within striking distance of UConn. With 36 seconds left in the quarter, Unique Drake drained a floater as the shot clock expired to make it 16-13, however it was waved off and ruled a shot clock violation. A made free throw by Aaliyah Edwards set the scoreline at 17-11.
In the second quarter, the Huskies began to take control, spurring a 14-2 run, Azzi Fudd buried a pair of triples in the stanza as part of their scoring stretch. In the closing moments of the half, the Huskies' Nika Muhl finished a fastbreak layup and sank a free throw to give the Huskies their largest advantage, 41-20, heading into halftime.
To start the second half, the Huskies defense continued to force the Red Storm to struggle before Drake buried a 3-pointer that sparked a quick 7-0 run. The stretch was completed by a transition bucket from Patterson off of a sweet find from Drake.
After a triple in the fourth quarter from Bailey brought the deficit back to 20 points, 61-41, but the efficient Huskies responded with an 8-0 run engineered by Fudd. UConn finished the contest shooting 62.3 percent from the field.
The Johnnies will return to BIG EAST action on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tilt at No. 25/RV Villanova at Finneran Pavilion.
