Jayla Everett powers the Red Storm with 24 points in Chicago
CHICAGO- The St. John's women's basketball team fended off a late DePaul run to earn a crucial road victory, 81-72.
The win was the first for the Red Storm over DePaul since March 7, 2016 and snapped a 13-game losing streak against its conference foe.
Jayla Everett exploded for 24 points at Wintrust Arena, marking the sixth-time the team's top scorer has reached the 20-point mark or more. The redshirt senior went 9-for-18 from the floor and tied her season-best with five made 3-pointers.
Jillian Archer logged a double-double, her fourth of the season, concluding the outing with 10 points and 11 boards.
Unique Drake was terrific off the bench, adding a season-high 19 points in an efficient manner, going 8-for-12 from field-goal range.
The fourth Johnnie to finish in double-figures in scoring was Kadaja Bailey, who turned in a 12-point outing. The guard tied a season-high collecting nine rebounds and dished out a game-high four assists.
DePaul's Aneesah Morrow led all scorers with 26 points and collected 11 rebounds during the outing.
After the Blue Demons made 5-of-8 to start the game from three-point land, the stifling Red Storm defense held them to 1-of-13 the remainder of the game.
Bailey earned the start in Chicago, which marked her 134th career appearance for the Red Storm, tying the all-time program record held by Aaliyah Lewis, who starred in Queens from 2013-17.
The Blue Demons maintained the lead for the entire opening half, as Morrow fueled the offensive attack adding 18 points in the first 20 minutes. However, the Red Storm stayed within arms length never trailing by more than seven.
On the final play of the initial half, Everett flushed a mid-range jumper off an in-bounds play on the baseline to trim the deficit to 39-36 heading into the locker room.
St. John's (15-3, 7-3 BIG EAST) had a strong start the third quarter, as a 9-2 scoring stretch courtesy of a pair of made baskets from both Everett and Archer gave the Red Storm a 45-42 lead it never relinquished.
The squad continued to hold the lead in the third stanza, as Everett buried her fifth and final triple of the game with 3:04 remaining in the quarter to make it 56-48.
In the final frame, St. John's continued to expand its advantage ripping off a 9-0 run to start the quarter. The run concluded with a made triple from Drake that gave the Red Storm its largest lead of the day, 70-52.
DePaul (11-9, 4-5 BIG EAST) refused to go down quietly orchestrating a 10-2 spurt to bring themselves back into the game in the fourth. Anaya Peoples finished a lay-up that brought their deficit to single-digits, 74-65.
The Johnnies were able to maintain the lead despite full-court pressure from their opponents. DePaul was able to come as close as seven, 77-70 with 0:41 remaining, before four makes from the charity stripe lifted Head Coach Joe Tartamella and his crew to its 16th win of the year.
The Red Storm will return to Queens to take on Butler on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. inside Carnesecca Arena, where the group has won 12-straight.
