The Johnnies have won three of their last four meetings with the Lions
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2023) – After a thrilling 1-0 victory over RV Marquette, the St. John's men's soccer team will look to ride its recent high into Tuesday's final non-conference matchup against Columbia at Belson Stadium.
The 7 p.m. tilt will be streamed live on FloFC with Joe Vasile on the call. Live stats will also be available on RedStormSports.com. The first 150 fans in attendance will receive a free Qdoba taco upon entry.
The Red Storm overcame second-half adversity against Marquette at a two-man disadvantage for the final 34:28 of the match. The Johnnies are just the third team in Division I to emerge victorious with two men down this season, joining Houston Christian over Omaha (4-1 on Aug. 27) and then-No. 2 Marshall over No. 9 James Madison (3-1 on Sept. 16). However, St. John's total time down a pair of players was more than two times longer than other teams combined (13:16).
The Golden Eagles racked up 17 corners and 19 total shots, 17 of which came in the second half and 13 in the final third of the contest. St. John's capitalized on its lone shot of the game, seeing Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau rocket his seventh goal past one of the BIG EAST's top goalkeepers, Ludvig Malburg.
The Canadian striker is tied for the BIG EAST lead with seven goals, matching Georgetown's Jacob Murrell. Fleuriau Chateau is ranked 23rd in NCAA Division I with 15 points on the season. The Johnnies' forward is also among the conference's best in league play with his three goals, sitting in a four-way tie for first.
Goalkeeper Alec McLachlan stood on his head for all 90 minutes, logging just three saves and keeping the host team at bay with minimal second-chance opportunities to charge the Golden Eagles with its first home loss of the season. Defenders Thomas Lamaille and Connor Mucchetti also played a full 90 for the Red Storm while Macoumba Ba, Eric Danquah and Colin Veltri played 80-plus minutes in the victory.
Miguel Diaz continues to be a force in the offensive third, tallying a team-best fifth assist and securing the second-most helpers in the BIG EAST.
The Johnnies and Lions will square off for the 12th time in program history with Head Coach Dr. David Masur holding a 3-1-0 mark against Columbia since taking over the program.
St. John's will look to jump out to a three-game home winning streak against the Lions on Tuesday. The last time these two programs linked up in 2021, St. John's emerged victorious, 1-0, thanks in part to a 43rd-minute goal from Lucas Bartlett, who currently plays for 2023 Western Conference Regular Season Champion St. Louis FC.
The Lions enter Tuesday's slate with a 2-4-2 record, taking a 3-0 victory over Manhattan (Sept. 5) and a 2-0 win against Quinnipiac (Sept. 19). Columbia has dropped its last two contests by two or more goals, a 4-0 setback to Brown on Sept. 23, followed by a 3-1 loss to Harvard on Saturday.
Will DeNight has been efficient in the offensive zone with his .611 shot accuracy while pacing the Lions with three goals and six points on the season. Chad Baker and Joao Lima have chipped in two goals of their own.
Columbia is ranked inside the nation's top 40 with 4.3 saves per game, good for 37th. Michael Collodi paces the Ivy League with his .784 save percentage.
