St. John’s Nets Late-Game Equalizer to Tie Providence, 2-2

Frederique St.-Jean headed home the game-tying goal with 1:27 remaining
QUEENS, N.Y– The St. John's women's soccer team equalized with 1:27 left to play to draw with Providence, 2-2, on Sunday afternoon in Belson Stadium.
Frederique St.-Jean headed home the game-tying goal in the 89th minute on Senior Day to earn a crucial point in a closely contested BIG EAST.
Sunday's late goal marked the second time in as many games that St. John's earned a result in the closing minutes of the match.
Nicole Gordon tallied the first goal early on off a header in the sixth minute for her third goal of the year.
Jessica Garziano provided the assist on both goals with service off a corner kick. The graduate student is now up to nine helpers on the year and 31 on her career. She also recorded a season-high five shots during Sunday's match.
Maria O'Sullivan logged five stops on the afternoon against the Friars. Over the last two games, the graduate student has registered 12 saves in net for the Johnnies.
Just six minutes into the game, Garziano played a curling ball in from the corner flag. Gordon outleaped the Providence defenders and fired home the header to give the Red Storm an early advantage.
St. John's (7-4-3, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) kept applying pressure in the opening half. Garziano launched a rocket on frame but Providence's Emma Bodmer got a hand on it and pushed it off the crossbar. Ava Collins delivered a strike on the ensuing rebound but the attempt was blocked.
The Johnnies went to the locker room with a 1-0 advantage after 45 minutes of play on a windy day in Queens.
In the latter half, the Friars began to take control dialing up their attacking prowess. The visitors recorded six shots over a five-minute timeframe the last of which soared into the net off the foot of Gillian Kenney to tie the game, 1-1, in the 59th minute.
Just four minutes later, Providence capitalized once again as Meg Hughes gained possession and delivered a strike into bottom right corner of the twine for the go-ahead in the 63rd minute.
As the Red Storm searched for the equalizer it came close, as Lauryn Tran had an opportunity but the junior's strike flew wide in the 73rd minute.
With the clock winding down, the Johnnies earned their third corner of the afternoon. Garziano played a ball in and St-.Jean beat a pair of Friars defenders to it. The defender popped a header over the Providence goalkeeper and into the back-of-the-net for a crucial late-game equalizer to pick up a point at home.
Prior to Sunday's match, 10 seniors were honored on the field for their contributions to the program over the years. Isabelle Aviza, Collins, Garziano, Gordon, Sydney Moore, Nicole Multer, O'Sullivan, Angelina Scoma, St.-Jean and Katherine Turner were all honored pre-game.
On Thursday, St. John's will host Butler at 7 p.m. at Belson Stadium for another BIG EAST battle.
