Rashanny Solano Smith Earns Second BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Nod

The libero averaged 6.16 digs per set against Xavier and Butler
QUEENS, N.Y. – After leading the Red Storm to a stellar 2-0 weekend where it swept Xavier and Butler, Rashanny Solano Smith was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday.
This Freshman of the Week selection marks the second of the season for Solano Smith. She was previously tabbed as Freshman of the Week after the opening weekend of BIG EAST competition on Sept. 25.
The talented libero started in all six of the Johnnies' sets against Xavier and Butler, recording a team-high 37 digs while averaging 6.16 per set. She also registered seven assists, two aces and two kills.
Solano Smith's 6.16 digs per set was the highest in the BIG EAST last weekend. She currently sits in second in conference matches in digs with 102 at 5.37 per set and fifth overall with 262, averaging 3.97 per set. Her 262 total digs lead St. John's so far this season.
The Limon, Costa Rica product paced the Johnnies in digs in both of their matches across the weekend. Against Xavier on Friday night, Solano Smith registered 13 digs, two assists, two aces and a kill across three sets. During Saturday's straight-set sweep over Butler, she went off for 24 digs, worth eight per set to go along with five assists and a kill.
St. John's currently boats a 5-1 BIG EAST record, marking its best conference start since 2008, when the program won its third straight regular season BIG EAST Title.
The Red Storm will be back on the court on Friday when they host DePaul at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live stats available on RedStormSports.com.
