Garziano becomes the third player in program history to earn league honors four times
NEW YORK- After putting together one of the most decorated seasons in St. John's women's soccer history, Jessica Garziano has been named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and a unanimous first team all-conference selection.
Garziano becomes the sixth player in program history to ever win one of the league's coveted major awards, which were announced by the conference office on Wednesday morning.Â
With her unanimous all-league first team nod, the longtime staple of the Red Storm midfield has moved into elite company as one of three players to ever earn all-league honors four times.
Garziano joins recent St. John's Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Diana Poulin (2013-16) and prolific goal scorer Zsani Kajan (2017-21) as the only players to ever accomplish that feat during their tenure in Queens.Â
The attacking midfielder was instrumental in the Johnnies' success over the 19-game slate. Garziano tallied 10 goals and 11 assists, becoming the first player in St. John's history to log double-digits in those categories in a single-season.
After her third multi-assist game of the season in a decisive win at Marquette on Oct. 22, Garziano matched the single-season program record for helpers with 11 on the year. That mark currently ranks seventh in the country and is the second most by a BIG EAST player in the last five years.Â
The midfielder skyrocketed past her previous career-high in the goal category during the 2023 campaign finishing with 10.  The veteran ranks second in the league and top-40 in NCAA Division I in total goals. At the penalty spot, she went 3-for-3 and ranks tied first in penalty kick conversion rate at 100 percent. Â
The graduate student recorded 31 points, which led the BIG EAST and currently ranks top-10 in the country. In the 16 matches where the Red Storm added a tally, Garziano logged a point in 15 of them and scored or assisted 21 of the team's 33 goals (63.6 percent).Â
On Sept. 17, the Long Island native became the program's all-time assist with her second helper of the day in a dramatic 4-3 victory over Harvard at Belson Stadium. She surpassed Jamie Clark with the 28th of her tenure. Garziano finished out with 33 career assists, which ranks fourth among active career leaders in NCAA Division I.Â
Over the course of her career, Garziano tallied 22 goals and 33 assists for 77 total points. She has etched her name in the school's record books, ranking 1st in assists, fifth in points, seventh in goals and fourth in shots with 189.Â
No stranger to racking up awards, Garziano makes the all-league squad for the fourth time. She was tabbed to the first team during the spring 2021 season and the second team in in the fall of 2021-22.Â
Propelling her team to success, the Johnnie was apart of 40 wins, three BIG EAST Tournament appearances, a trip to the conference title game and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 in 2021.Â
