St. John’s Falls to Michigan on Monday at MSG

The Red Storm dropped its Gavitt Tipoff Games matchup to the Wolverines, 89-73
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team fell to Michigan, 89-73, in a Gavitt Tipoff Games matchup before a crowd of 14,168 on Monday inside Madison Square Garden.
Dug McDaniel and Nimari Burnett each set career-highs scoring 26 points and 21 points, respectively, to lead the Wolverines. Terrance Williams II (12 points) and Tray Jackson (10 points) also finished in double figures for Michigan (3-0).
St. John's senior center Joel Soriano recorded his 1,000th career point on Monday, as the Yonkers native finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting to go with nine rebounds.
Michigan shot 54.5 percent (32-62 FG) from the field to the Red Storm's 36.0 percent (27-75 FG) field goal shooting mark. St. John's outrebounded the Wolverines, 47-39, and pulled down 27 offensive boards, which were the team's most in nearly six years.
St. John's (1-1) held close with the Wolverines for the majority of a first half, which featured eight lead changes and four ties. St. John's led by as many as five points early in the stanza after a Soriano layup and Daniss Jenkins' 3-pointer put the Johnnies up 18-13 at the 14:30 mark.
Burnett was an anchor for the Wolverines' offense in the first half as he scored 15 of the team's first 16 points and hit his first eight field goal attempts, including four 3-pointers. After Chris Ledlum gave St. John's a 31-29 advantage with a free-throw at the 6:28 mark, Burnett drained his third 3-pointer 19 seconds later to give Michigan a lead it would not relinquish.
In the final six minutes of the opening half, the Wolverines saw its lead grow to 48-38 by intermission. Burnett set his career scoring high before halftime, as the graduate transfer from Alabama had 21 points by the break.
Soriano scored six of the team's first eight points after halftime with a pair of three-point plays. However, the Wolverines countered with the next eight points to go up 60-43 just over five minutes into the stanza and never looked back.
McDaniel powered Michigan's offense in the final 20 minutes by scoring 16 of his 26 points in the last 20 minutes. The sophomore guard dished out seven assists and shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line on Monday.
Zuby Ejiofor finished with seven points and six rebounds while Drissa Traore also posted seven points and grabbed four boards in 14 minutes apiece off the Red Storm bench.
The Red Storm returns to action on Thursday for its opening game of the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic in South Carolina. St. John's takes on North Texas inside TD Arena at 1:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
