St. John’s Opens 2023 Charleston Classic on Thursday versus North Texas

The Red Storm and Mean Green square off in a quarterfinal matchup at 1:30 p.m. on ESPNU
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team will make its second appearance in the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic beginning on Thursday when the Red Storm squares off with 2023 NIT Champion North Texas. Tip time is schedule for 1:30 p.m. at TD Arena on the campus of the College of Charleston.
Thursday's contest between St. John's (1-1) and North Texas (2-0) will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU with Chuckie Kempf and Perry Clark calling the action from Charleston, S.C. An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brian Mahoney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 388 and the SiriusXM App.
The Red Storm previously competed in the 2012 edition of the Charleston Classic. St. John's knocked off tournament host College of Charleston in the quarterfinals before falling to Murray State and No. 16 Baylor. Former St. John's standout D'Angelo Harrison was named to the Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 22.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals in the Red Storm's three games.
St. John's will look to bounce back against North Texas after falling to Michigan, 89-73, on Monday at Madison Square Garden. Senior center Joel Soriano led the Red Storm with 15 points and nine rebounds while also recording his 1,000th career point in the home contest versus the Wolverines.
Thursday's quarterfinal matchup with North Texas will be the programs first-ever meeting. The Red Storm's second contest will be against either Dayton or LSU on Friday. The opposite side of the bracket features No. 6/6 Houston, Towson, Wake Forest and Utah, all potential opponents for St. John's in its final game of the tournament on Nov. 19. St. John's holds an 18-15 advantage against its six other potential opponents while the Red Storm's Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino owns a 23-8 all-time record against this year's Charleston Classic field.
Fresh off a 2023 NIT Championship run and a program-best 31 victories, North Texas opened the season with a pair of home wins under first-year Head Coach Ross Hodge. In his seventh year with the program, after serving the previous six season as an associate head coach, Hodge guided his team to an 83-77 overtime win over Northern Iowa on Nov. 7, followed by a 75-64 victory against Omaha on Saturday.
The Mean Green is led by Aaron Scott who averaged 22.0 points shooting 62.5 percent (15-24 FG) from the field in the team's wins over Northern Iowa and Omaha. Scott has also converted 7-of-11 (63.3 pct) attempts from distance this season. The 6-foot-7 junior wing was named the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Player of the Week on Monday.
The winner of Thursday's contest between St. John's and North Texas will advance to the semifinals and face the winner of Dayton and LSU on Friday at 2 p.m. on ESPN2.
