Fencing Announces 2023-24 Schedule

St. John’s Fencing Team will start competition in December
QUEENS, N.Y. – Head coach Yury Gelman has announced the 2023-24 St. John's Fencing competition schedule.
The Johnnies will open competition at the Brandeis Invitational on Dec. 3 against MIT, Boston College, Cornell, Yale and host school Brandeis. Returning graduate student Jan Jurkiewicz dominated last year's event with 14 individual wins in the men's foil category. Julia Cieslar and Antonina Lachman each recorded 13 wins in the women's saber and foil categories respectively.
On Jan. 20, the action comes to Queens as the Red Storm will host the St. John's Invitational inside of Taffner Fieldhouse. Columbia, Harvard, Penn State, Ohio State and Notre Dame will make the trip to Queens for St. John's lone home event. Malwina Kolodziejczyk tallied 10 wins in the women's foil while Fares Ferjani captured 11 victories in the men's saber during last year's invitational.
The following day, St. John's will travel to the University of Pennsylvania to face the Quakers and NYU on Jan. 21. The women's squad secured two victories at the event last year over NYU and Wayne State.
Next on the calendar will be the LIU Shark Showcase on Jan. 28, when St. John's will face off against the pool of LIU, Hunter, Princeton, Columbia and Yale. In last year's event, the men's team defeated Columbia, Yale, LIU and Penn to finish the event with a 4-1 record.
After a near-month hiatus, the Johnnies will head to Philadelphia to wrap up the regular season and compete in the Temple Invitational against Penn, Princeton, Duke, Penn State and Temple on Feb. 25. Brothers Ahmed Ferjani and Fares Ferjani each racked up 12 wins last year in the City of Brotherly Love. Meanwhile, Nicole Gavrilko and Julia Cieslar finished each with 11 wins on the women's side.
The NCAA Northeast Regionals will be hosted by LIU in Brooklyn, N.Y., and take place on March 10. Columbus, Ohio will be the site for the NCAA Championships as it will be hosted by Ohio State University from March 21-24.
Gelman enters his 29th season at the helm of the Red Storm fencing teams. Over his tenure, Gelman has coached over 135 All-Americans, 26 individual NCAA Championships and won the 2001 national title. Last year, Gelman coached St. John's to a seventh-place finish at the 2023 NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year. Jurkiewicz captured the NCAA Championship in the men's foil competition, marking the first St. John's individual champion since 2019.
