St. John’s Suffers Setback Against UCF, 61-48

Unique Drake finished with 16 a game-high points
SAN JUAN, P.R. – The St. John's women's basketball team suffered a setback on Friday afternoon dropping its contest with UCF, 61-48, at the Discover Puerto Rico Classic.
Unique Drake led all scorers with 16 points and drained four 3-pointers at Coliseo Guillermo Angulo. The redshirt senior went 4-of-8 from beyond-the-arc marking the fourth time this season she has flushed four or more triples. The guard is shooting 50 percent (20-40) from 3-point range on the year.
Jillian Archer finished with 14 points and made a career-high 10 free throws marking the most by a Red Storm player from the charity stripe since Dec. 1, 2019. Archer went 10-for-12 (83.3%) and becomes just the seventh player in the last decade to convert double-digit free throws in a single-contest.
The trio combined for 44 of the team's 48 points on Friday afternoon.
Amber Brown pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and dished out a season-high three assists in the losing effort.
Overall, the Red Storm were strong from the free throw line going 15-for-18 (83.3 %)
In the early going, St. John's rattled off a 6-0 scoring stretch completed by a fastbreak lay-up from Mayo put it in front, 6-4. Midway through the opening quarter UCF (5-0) hit its stride offensively engineering a 10-0 run over 3:23. A long two-point jumper from Mayo halted the run before Drake's first make from long-range brought the scoreline to 16-12.
Just three seconds in the second frame, Drake knocked down her second off a feed from Brown to cut it to a one possession game, 18-15. The two squads went back-and-forth as the quarter went on with the Knights holding a cushion. The Red Storm cut it to three, 28-25 with a made triple. UCF got the last basket of the opening half to take a five-point advantage into the break, 30-25.
In the third quarter, Drake found her range from downtown sunk third triple of the game to trim the UCF lead to six, 36-30. The Knights from the continued to gradually grow their lead and built up a double-digit advantage heading into the final frame, 46-35. Archer made five free throws during the third quarter.
In the final 10 minutes, UCF maintained control of the contest. Mayo brought the deficit back to single-digits with a hard drive to the basket to inch closer, 50-41, with 5:50 remaining. The Knights kept the Johnnies at bay over the closing minutes to remain undefeated and move to 5-0 on the year.
St. John's will cap off the Discover Puerto Rico Classic tomorrow night when it faces Jackson State at 8 p.m. ET.

Ber'Nyah Mayo added 14 points and is currently averaging 17 points per outing in San Juan. Over her last four contests, the crafty point guard is averaging 14.0 points over her last four appearances
