Red Storm and Tigers will meet for the first-time ever
SAN JUAN, P.R.– The St. John's women's basketball team will suit up for the final time in Puerto Rico on Saturday night when it faces Jackson State at 8 p.m. ET.
Saturday's contest from Coliseo Guillermo Angulo will be streamed on FloSports.
The Red Storm will look to get back on track after falling to UCF on Friday in Puerto Rico, 61-48. The Johnnies trailed by just five, 30-25, at the break in a low-scoring affair. The Knights slowly pulled away in the second half.
Unique Drake led all scorers with 16 points in Friday's contest and went 4-for-8 from 3-point range. The redshirt senior has drained 20 triples through the first six contests and is shooting at a 50 percent clip (20-40) from downtown. The Columbia, S.C., native is one of just 14 players in NCAA Division I to have nailed 20 or more 3-pointers this season.
Jillian Archer had a career day from the charity stripe on Friday, the forward went 10-for-12 (83.3%) percent from the free-throw line. The graduate student's 10 makes from the line were the most by a Red Storm player since Leilani Correa made 12 against UNLV on Dec. 1, 2019. Archer became just the seventh Johnnie to make double-digit free throws in a single-game in the past decade.
Ber'Nyah Mayo has picked up the pace offensively in recent contests. The UMass transfer is averaging 14.0 points per game over her last four outings including a season-high 20-point performance against VCU on Thanksgiving.
The Red Storm defense is currently allowing opponents to just 58.5 points per game and has held them to 61 points or less in four of its six games this season.
Jackson State enters the contest with a 4-1 overall record and have split its first two contests in the tournament. The squad dropped its opening game to UCF, 63-54, before dominating Division II opponent Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, 80-33, last night.
Jackson State brings a balanced scoring attack with six players averaging 6.5 points per game or more. Miya Crump leads the group posting 11.0 per contest.
The Tigers have won four consecutive SWAC Regular Season Championships and made an appearance in the 2023 WNIT.
This marks the first-ever meeting between the programs have met on the hardwood.
Last year, the Red Storm hosted a SWAC school in Bethune-Cookman and cruised to a 73-52 victory at Carnesecca Arena. The Johnnies hold a 5-0 all-time record against current members of the SWAC, dating back to 1995.
After returning from Puerto Rico, St. John's will be back at Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday night to take on Loyola Maryland at 7 p.m.
