St. John’s Comeback Falls Short Against Jackson State, 60-56

Red Storm finish out Discover Puerto Rico Classic
SAN JUAN, P.R.– The St. John's women's basketball team's comeback fell short on Saturday night, falling to Jackson State, 60-56, in its final game of the Discover Puerto Rico Classic.
Trailing by nine late in the third quarter, the Red Storm marched back and made it a one-point with 45 seconds remaining but were unable to pull out the win in San Juan.
For the second-straight game and fifth time this season, Unique Drake led all scorers totaling 17 points at Coliseo Guillermo Angulo.
Jillian Archer finished in double-figures for the sixth time this year tallying 11 points. The forward was efficient shooting 4-of-7 (57.1%) from the floor and 3-of-4 (75%) from the charity stripe. She chipped in a season-high four steals.
Ber'Nyah Mayo was the third Red Storm player to finish in double-figures chipping in 10 points. The point guard averaged 14.7 points per contest in three games in San Juan.
In the first quarter, the Red Storm tallied its first four points from the charity stripe. Drake drilled a second-chance 3-pointer to break a tie, 7-4. On the ensuing offensive possession Drake lobbed a pass to Archer in the point for an easy lay-in. In the second quarter, Mayo found Skye Owen on the right-side from a flushed triple to regain an edge, 16-15. The two sides remained close throughout the frame before a triple from the Tigers' Miya Crump grew their lead to its largest of the game, 28-22. Mayo shifted the momentum with a takeaway and finish on the break. The Red Storm then made four free throws to knot the score at 28. Jackson State tacked on the final basket of the first half to go up, 30-28, after two quarters.
In the second half, a 3-pointer from Drake retook the St. John's lead, 33-32. Jackson State immediately responded with a 7-0 scoring spurt to take back control of the matchup. With 2:22 remaining in the third, Ti'lan Boler banked in a lay-up to take the Tigers' largest lead of the night, 45-36.
In the finale frame, neither team scored in the opening few minutes as Jackson State (5-1) carried a nine-point advantage. St. John's began to climb back into after a pull-up from Amber Brown followed by a fastbreak and-one from Drake trimmed the lead to four, 47-43, with just under seven minutes to play.
The two sides traded baskets over the next few minutes before a pair of free throws earned off an offensive board from Tara Daye and a lay-up from Mayo cut it to 53-51. Boler responded to make it a two-possession game once again. Drake made a big time play driving straight to the tin and finishing through contact. The redshirt senior cashed in on the free-throw to make it a one-point game, 55-54.
A second chance lay-up from the Tigers' Daphane White brought it back to a three-point game with 34 seconds to play. The Red Storm weren't able to get a shot off on the ensuing possession and Jackson State continued to stretch the lead from the free-throw line.
Archer tacked on the final bucket on a dish from Brown with six seconds to spare but the deficit was too large to overcome and led to a 60-56 final score.
After returning from Puerto Rico, St. John's will be back at Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday night to take on Loyola Maryland at 7 p.m.
