QUEENS, N.Y. – The fourth-seeded St. John's men's soccer team begins its quest for a 10th BIG EAST Championship when fifth-seeded UConn visits Belson Stadium on Saturday. The quarterfinal matchup is slated for 6 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Ralph Bednarcyzk on the call.
Live stats will also be available on RedStormSports.com. Students in attendance, who can get their free ticket using their StormCard, will receive free pizza.
The Red Storm will make its 30th appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament, looking to make its first conference semifinal since 2019. The Johnnies boast a 35-18-5 record in the league tournament.
The Johnnies (8-4-5, 3-1-4 BIG EAST) put together a solid regular season that featured a 7-1 victory over Temple, scoring the most goals in a game since 1998. As the campaign progressed, the Johnnies were met with adversity after taking two red cards in back-to-back games against teams receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, ultimately, emerging with a 1-1 draw against No. 4 Akron on Sept. 23, and a 2-1 road victory over RV Marquette six days later.
St. John's is coming off a 2-2 draw against Creighton last weekend that helped them clinch the fourth seed in the conference tournament and remain unbeaten at home with a 5-0-3 mark. The Red Storm enters the postseason with a 4-0-4 record over the last eight games and has outscored its opponents, 13-6. Of those 13 goals, Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau has scored nine of them, seeing two against the Bluejays on Saturday. The Canadian striker cashed in for the fourth straight game and recorded his third brace of the season with goals in the 29th and 41st minutes.
Fleuriau Chateau sits in a six-way tie for the national lead in goals, joined by fellow BIG EAST competitor Jason Shokalook from Akron. The 13th player in program history to reach double-digit goals will look to climb the single-season goals leaderboard, trying to match Jesse Van Saun (1996) and Huey Ferguson (1993) for third all-time with 16. The redshirt junior's 29 points on the season are also ranked top five in the nation.
St. John's and UConn will meet for just the ninth time in the BIG EAST Tournament since its first meeting in 1985, splitting its previous matchups evenly at four apiece. The Red Storm will look to make it three straight wins against the Huskies in the conference tournament, having won in 2006 and 2011, both by a score of 1-0. In their last postseason meeting on Nov. 13, 2011, St. John's took down then third-ranked Huskies, 1-0, in double-overtime to secure its ninth BIG EAST Championship. Tournament Most Outstanding Player Jack Bennett netted the golden goal in the 97th minute.
As a squad, St. John's continues to be one of the nation's top assist teams, logging a BIG EAST-best 44 helpers this season and sitting fifth in NCAA Division I. Sophomore Miguel Diaz has been steady in the assist department with his conference-leading nine helpers this season, good for ninth in the country. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native is looking to become the first Johnnie since Stefani Miglioranzi (12 in 1997) to post double-digit assists in a season.
With an assist from Diaz on Saturday, it would mark the first time the team has a double-digit goal scorer, Fleuriau Chateau, and a double-digit assist man since 1996. Jesse Van Saun scored 16 goals en route to the Johnnies' lone NCAA Championship while Medufia Kulego (14g, 10a) and Wojtek Krakowiak (11g, 14a) each produced 10-plus goals and assists that season.
The Red Storm holds a slight 17-15-7 advantage against the Huskies, including a 10-1-5 mark in Queens. The Johnnies will look to avenge its regular-season 2-1 setback to UConn on Sept. 15. Fleuriau Chateau scored in the 60th minute, capitalizing on one of the team's 11 second-half shots.
The Huskies wrapped up the regular season with an 8-7-1 record and a 4-4-0 mark in conference play. After a hot start to the 2023 campaign, UConn cooled off with a 2-4-1 showing in October.
Forward Scott Testeri paces the club with seven goals and 18 points, both of which sit fifth in the BIG EAST. Teammate Nicolas Tomerius sits third in conference with seven assists.
Through 16 games, the Huskies rank 14th in the NCAA Division I with 37 assists. As a team, UConn has also unloaded 14.8 shots per game, good for 19th in the nation.
The winner of Saturday's match will head to Maryland SoccerPlex to face the winner of top-seeded Georgetown and eighth-seeded Seton Hall on Thursday, Nov. 9.
