The Red Storm enters its season opener receiving votes in the Associated Press (AP) Preseason Top 25 poll for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign. St. John's received 47 votes, the third-most by teams outside of the rankings and is one of six BIG EAST teams to collect votes in the poll.
The Johnnies, who are coming off an 18-15 season in 2022-23, are under new direction with Pitino, who will embark on his 36th season at the helm of an NCAA Division I program. The two-time national champion boasts an 834-293 record in his career and is the winningest active coach in NCAA Division I. The legendary head coach is 30-4 all-time in season openers and will face Stony Brook for the first time in his career.
St. John's returned two letterwinners from last season, most notably Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team selection and team captain Joel Soriano. The 2023 BIG EAST Most Improved Player posted 25 double-doubles a year ago, the most by a Johnnie since Walter Berry had 28 in 1985-86. Soriano's 25 double-doubles were the second most in the nation last season. In addition, he recorded career highs with 15.2 points and 11.9 rebounds per game, the latter of which led the BIG EAST and sat fourth in the national standings.
Soriano and fellow returnee Drissa Traore are joined by 12 newcomers, including the nation's second-leading scorer from a year ago, Jordan Dingle, who is set to make his Red Storm debut on Tuesday. The 2023 Ivy League Player of the Year, who missed both of the Red Storm's exhibition contests, averaged 23.4 points while shooting 46.3 percent from the field for Penn.
St. John's has won nine straight season openers, dating back to the 2014-15 season. The Johnnies will also ride a 19-game winning streak in its season debut at Carnesecca Arena into Tuesday's contest with the Seawolves.
The Red Storm and Stony Brook will square off for the 10th time in program history and the first time since Dec. 6, 2020, when St. John's earned an 89-66 victory in Queens. The Johnnies nearly broke the program's single-game record for steals with 20, falling two short of the mark (22) set against St. Francis Brooklyn on Dec. 1, 1992. Greg Williams Jr. logged six steals in the victory while posting 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting.
Stony Brook finished with an 11-22 overall record during the 2022-23 season. Head Coach Geno Ford enters his fifth season with the program and has posted a 58-63 record during his time leading the Seawolves.
The Seawolves return graduate student Tyler Stephenson-Moore who averaged a team-best 14.3 points and 1.3 steals to go with 2.2 assists per contest last season. The local product from Jamaica, N.Y., was named to the 2023-24 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Preseason Second Team.
In total, Stony Brook returns nine letterwinners and welcome five newcomers this season. Transfers Aaron Clarke (Sacred Heart) and Andre Snoddy (Central Connecticut State) are expected to make an immediate impact after averaging 10.0 points and 9.5 points, respectively, last season.
