Fleuriau Chateau becomes the 16th Johnnie to be selected in the MLS SuperDraft
QUEENS, N.Y. – Hours after being named an Academic All-American, St. John's men's soccer forward Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau has been selected by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC with its third-round pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft on Tuesday.
"Congratulations to Nick on being selected in the MLS SuperDraft," Head Coach Dr. David Masur said. "He is a great goal scorer with a tremendous ability to work well within any system. Nick is powerful and clinical in the 18-yard box. Vancouver is very lucky to have a player like him."
Fleuriau Chateau is the 16th St. John's player since 1998 to be selected in the MLS SuperDraft under the direction of Coach Masur. He is also the second player to be chosen by the Whitecaps, joining 2023 MLS Best XI honoree and former St. John's defender Tim Parker, who was picked 13th overall in the 2015 SuperDraft.
The Red Storm attacker earned the 74th-overall pick after just 31 appearances in Queens across three campaigns. Averaging a goal every 78 minutes, the Canadian striker produced one of the best seasons in 2023 after suffering an ACL injury and missing the 2022 slate.
Fleuriau Chateau rattled off 14 goals (7th in NCAA) and one assist for 29 points (18th) as a spark off the bench for the majority of the 2023 campaign. The 5-foot-10 forward also unleashed four game-winning tallies in his final season with the Red Storm. The redshirt junior concluded the year in a four-way tie for fifth on St. John's single-season goals leaderboard, matching Medufia Kulego (1996), Shalrie Joseph (2000) and Simone Salinno (2003) with 14 on the year.
The Ottawa, Ontario native secured three weekly honors, including a BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week following his final brace of the year in the team's regular-season finale against Creighton (Oct. 28). Fleuriau Chateau also logged two-goal performances against Rutgers (Aug. 28) and Columbia (Oct. 3).
Fleuriau Chateau racked up a plethora of postseason accolades, earning an All-BIG EAST First Team nod, a United Soccer Coaches All-Region Second Team selection and a spot on the All-ECAC Second Team after an improbable run in the offensive third for the Johnnies. A standout in the classroom, Fleuriau Chateau became the sixth player in program history to secure Academic All-American honors, joining Jeff Stepan (2006-07), Matt Groenwald (2003-05), Chris Wingert (2001-03), Patrick Lonergan (2002) and Jeff Stoklosa (2001).
Fleuriau Chateau also finished the season ranked 88th in TopDrawerSoccer.com's Division I Postseason Top 100.
