St. John’s Outlasts Marist on the Road, 50-40

Drake reaches 1,000 career points, led all scorers with 19
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team pulled away from Marist in a low-scoring affair on the road, 50-40 on Saturday night.
The Red Storm defense was swarming at McCann Arena and held the Red Foxes to just 40 points and limited them to only 34 field goals attempts.
Unique Drake ended the contest with 19 points. The redshirt senior guard eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark with a made jumper in the second quarter. Drake becomes just the 29th player in the program's 49-year history to ever reach the milestone. For the fourth-straight game, Drake led all scorers and has scored 19 or more points for the fifth-time in nine games.
Skye Owen had a career-high five steals, all of which she tallied in the opening half. The sophomore guard added 11 points finishing in double-figures for the second straight game.
Phoenix Gedeon led the team in the rebounding category pulling down game-high 12 boards, the most of her Red Storm career.
The St. John's defense was ravaging at McCann Arena forcing the Red Foxes into 21 turnovers and logging nine steals.
After Marist jumped out to a 6-0 lead, the Red Storm settled in on the offensive end of the floor. Drake drained a triple to cut it to one, 6-5, before the first media timeout. In a low-scoring opening frame, the Red Foxes grabbed a one-point edge, 8-7, heading into the following quarter.
In the second quarter, Owen tallied a pair of steals that led to fastbreak lay-ins on the other end to cap off a 6-0 scoring spurt to make it 15-11.
The Red Storm went to the locker room after a defensive-minded opening half, 18-13.
In the third quarter, Marist tied the contest at 19 apiece before Ber'Nyah Mayo finished back-to-back buckets at the rim to jump out to a 4-point advantage, 23-19. Midway through the third stanza, the Red Foxes knotted the scoreline once again, 23-23, Gedeon finished in the lane and finished on the rim. On the ensuing offensive possession, Owen fed Drake in the corner for a buried triple to hop back in front five, 28-23. A 3-pointer from Owen capped off a 10-0 stretch for the Johnnies and gave them a double-digit advantage, 33-23.
In the final frame, Drake after being denied on her first attempt gathered the board and went back to the rim bouncing one off the glass to extend the advantage back to double-digits, 41-30.
In the closing moments, Marist cut the deficit to as few as seven, 47-40, in the final minute of the before Drake and Mayo took care of business from the charity stripe in the final stages tallying three makes to secure the Johnnies' second-straight victory.
The Red Storm will prepare for its second consecutive road matchup against a MAAC opponent, when it heads to Fairfield on Thursday, Dec. 7, for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
