Fencing Competes in Brandeis Invitational

A slew of impressive individual performances opens the 2023-24 campaign
WALTHAM, Mass. – The St. John's men's and women's fencing competed in their first 2023-24 season competition at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday. The two teams tallied a combined 11 victories with just three losses.
The men's team finished with a record of 5-2 as they garnered wins over MIT, Brandeis, Yeshiva, Brown and LIU. In the men's epee, the Johnnies were dominant as they secured a 50-13 record on the day.
Paul Fortin led the way for the epee team as he racked up 16 individual wins with just one loss. Senior Ahmed Ferjani also contributed 16 triumphs as he led the men's saber team to a 33-30 record. In his St. John's debut, freshman Igor Wozniak recorded 11 victories in the men's foil competition.
On the women's side, the Red Storm competed to a 6-1 record with wins over MIT, Brandeis, Wellesley, Tufts, LIU and Boston College. Much like the men's team, the women's epee team was a force as they notched a 41-22 record.
Malwina Kolodziejczyk and Antonina Lachman were dominant in the women's foil as they secured 19 and 18 individual wins respectively. Freshmen Eva Galper of the women's epee and Catinca Dumitru of the women's saber each made an instant impact in their first competition as they both finished with a dazzling mark of 18-3.
The Red Storm will return to action as a team in 2024 when they host the St. John's Invitational on Jan. 20 inside of Taffner Fieldhouse.
