St. John’s Welcomes DePaul to Carnesecca Arena on Saturday

Red Storm to host Black Fives Foundation game at Carnesecca
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 10, 2023)— The St. John's women's basketball team will host DePaul at Carnesecca Arena at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The BIG EAST battle will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports. Austin Rooney and Kim Adams will have the call from Queens.
Saturday marks the Black Fives Foundation game for the Red Storm. In honor of Black History Month, the BIG EAST Conference partnered with the non-profit organization, whose mission is to honor the pre-NBA era African-American basketball players for their contributions to the game. St. John's will be representing "Younger Set" an all-black women's athletic club out of Harlem, that produced some of the best players in New York City in the early 1900's.
During Saturday's game a pair of influential players Carmen "Cheese" Fletcher and Louise "Smiley" McCray will be honored as the "Pioneers of the Game" Award for their trailblazing contributions to the program.
St. John's University is hosting the first-ever "Johnnies Day" on Saturday, to celebrate the proud history and contributions of the University since its establishment in 1870. New York City Mayor Eric L. Adams, t New York City, has also declared Feb. 11, 2023, Johnnies Day, throughout the five boroughs ceremonial proclamation. The first 500 fans at Carnesecca Arena will receive a commemorative "Johnnies Day" t-shirt.
In its last outing, The Johnnies got back on track with a resounding 73-52 win at Xavier. A 22-4 run in the third quarter sealed the road victory and moved the squad to a 8-5 record and 9-5 mark in BIG EAST play.
Wednesday night marked the 200th career win Head Coach Joe Tartamella, who became the fourth active BIG EAST head coach to reach 200 wins and their current school.
Four players- Kadaja Bailey, Danielle Patterson, Jayla Everett and Rayven Peeples reached double-figures in scoring to lead a balanced offensive attack at the Cintas Center. Bailey led all scorers with 15 points, including 11 in the latter half.
The last time these two teams met, St. John's defeated DePaul for the first time since 2016, in a 81-72 triumph at WinTrust Arena on Jan. 21.
A trio of Red Storm players registered standout performances in Chicago. Everett exploded for 24 points at Wintrust Arena. The redshirt senior went 9-for-18 from the floor and tied her season-best with five made 3-pointers. Unique Drake went for a season-high 19 points off the bench and Jillian Archer logged a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.
DePaul comes to Carnesecca on the heels of two lopsided wins over Xavier and Butler. The Blue Demons are averaging 90.0 points over their last two games and rank second in the conference in scoring offense (77.3). The squad holds an overall record of 13-11 and a 6-7 mark in league competition.
DePaul is led 2022 AP Second Team All-American Aneesah Morrow, who has posted astounding numbers during her sophomore campaign. The forward is currently averaging 25.5 points and 11.7 boards per game.
Saturday marks the first of a crucial two-game homestand for the Red Storm, as it will face Villanova on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on MSG Network.
