Jayla Everett tied a season-high scoring 26 points
QUEENS, N.Y. — Jayla Everett went off for 26 points to power the St. John's women's basketball team past DePaul, 77-61, on Saturday in Queens.
Everett was on fire going off for 26 points and shot 5-for-7 (71.4 percent) from 3-point range and shot 9-for-15 (60 percent) from the floor. The shooting guard also led the team in assists dishing out four at Carnesecca Arena.
While Everett led the charge, five Red Storm players scored in double-figures for the first time this season.
Jillian Archer registered her fifth double-double of the season, as she ended the game with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Mimi Reid notched her best scoring outing of league play adding 11 points. The graduate student went a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Rayven Peeples posted an efficient evening tying for the game-high with 11 rebounds and logged three assists and four blocks.
Unique Drake (10 points) and Kadaja Bailey (11 points) were the final Johnnies to reached or surpass the 10-point mark.
The St. John's (19-5, 10-5 BIG EAST) defense was stifling, as the Blue Demons scored just 61 points, after coming into the game averaging 77.3 per game. DePaul shot a lowly 2-for-26 (7.7 percent) from 3-point range.
Aneesah Morrow led the charge for the visitors finishing the contest with 23 points and eight boards.
The Red Storm were in command from start to finish and took a 13-point lead in the first quarter after a 9-0 run capped off by a second chance triple from Everett, who Peeples kicked it out to after the offensive board.
In the following quarter, Everett continued to find the bottom of the basket flushing back-to-back 3-point attempts to make it, 36-25. St. John's went to halftime up 10, 39-29.
In the third quarter, DePaul crept closer cutting the deficit to as few as five, but Everett responded with her fifth triple of the game but St. John's back up eight, 51-43. The final field goal of the quarter came from Archer who corralled an offensive board and finished in the paint to give the home squad a nine-point lead heading into the last 10 minutes, 55-46.
The Johnnies got off to a terrific start in the final frame spurring a quick 5-0 run over the first minute. Reid drilled a three as the shot clock expired and then Drake turned a steal into a fastbreak lay-up on the other end to force a DePaul timeout. The Johnnies continued to expand its lead as the clock winded down. Everett recorded her final bucket to match a season-high set against Xavier on Jan. 8. The mid-range jumper gave St. John's its largest lead of outing, 73-50.
A marquee conference matchup awaits the Red Storm as it hosts No. 15 Villanova on Wednesday night. The game will be broadcast on MSG Network.
