David Jones scored a team-high 16 points to help the Red Storm to its second Top-25 win of the season
NEW YORK – For the second time this season, the St. John's men's basketball team knocked off a ranked opponent, taking down No. 20/17 Providence, 73-68, on Johnnies Day at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
In his first game back since the passing of his father on Feb. 3, David Jones led St. John's (15-11, 5-10 BIG EAST) with 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench. The junior wing from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic shot 5-for-12 inside the three-point arc.
Red Storm freshman AJ Storr finished in double figures for the seventh time in the last nine games, registering 15 points and going 6-for-11 from the floor. Storr also grabbed five rebounds. Dylan Addae-Wusu scored six of his 13 points in the final nine minutes of action. The junior guard hit all four of his free-throws and sank four of his nine shots from the field.
St. John's also received strong performances from Joel Soriano and Posh Alexander on Saturday at "The World's Most Famous Arena." Soriano tallied his 20th double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 boards, while Alexander nearly recorded a double-double of his own, racking up 10 points and nine assists.
Saturday's win marked the Johnnies second Quad 1 victory and Top-25 win in the past eight games since downing then-No. 6/7 UConn on Jan. 15 in Hartford, Conn.
St. John's jumped out to an early 16-point advantage over Providence (18-7, 10-4 BIG EAST), 25-9, hitting 11 of its first 16 shots. Addae-Wusu, Jones and Storr combined for 17 points through the first 9:28 of the game with each Johnnie converting from distance.
After a quick 7-2 spurt by the Friars over the next 2:49, Storr got The Garden crowd rocking, slamming home an Alexander lob while drawing a foul for an and-one that put St. John's up 30-16 with seven minutes left in the half.
Providence made a push late in the first half, as the Friars finished the stanza on a 16-5 run to pull within two, 37-35, at the break. After committing seven turnovers in the first 10 minutes, the Friars coughed up just one in the final 10 minutes of the opening half.
The Johnnies never trailed in the second half. After Providence locked the game at 39-39 with 17:09 on the clock, Soriano answered with back-to-back buckets to reclaim an advantage it would not relinquish.
St. John's built its lead back to double-digits with just over seven minutes remaining and controlled the contest the rest of the way. After Alexander fed Soriano with a behind the back pass for a two-handed slam, Storr knocked down a jumper to put the Johnnies up 62-52 at 7:39.
The Johnnies held Providence without a field goal for a key four and a half minutes span during the final six minutes of action, while St. John's went 9-for-12 from the free-throw line down the stretch.
Providence was led by Bryce Hopkins who scored a game-high 29 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Devin Carter chipped in 12 points and grabbed seven boards. Jared Bynum dished out a game-high 10 assists for the Friars.

Saturday's win was the Johnnies' third over Providence in their last four meetings in New York City.
The Red Storm will return to action Tuesday, visiting DePaul for a 9 p.m. ET matchup at Wintrust Arena. The national telecast will air on FS1.
