St. John’s Travels to No. 13/14 Delaware for Saturday Matchup

Red Storm will face its first road test of the season
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's lacrosse team will face its first road test of the season when it travels to Newark, Del., to take on No. 13/14 Delaware. First face-off between the Red Storm and Blue Hens is set for 12 p.m. from Delaware Stadium.
The game will be streamed on FloSports with Matt Papelka on the call from Newark, Del.
The Johnnies dropped their season opener to Manhattan last Saturday by a score of 9-5 in West Islip, N.Y. Connor Kalmus got his season off to a hot start, tallying his second career hat-trick in the first half against the Jaspers. Kalmus found the back of the net three times on just five shots in an efficient 2023 debut for the senior. Brian Kelly logged a goal and an assist for the 13th multi-point effort of his career. In his first career start, Luke Mangan scored his first career goal in a solo effort. Another first-time starter, sophomore Caiden Vlasimsky registered his second career assist and fired three shots at the cage.
Defensively, Kyle Munson made his first start between the pipes for the Red & White, racking up a career-high 10 saves and a team-best three groundballs. Fellow first-year Johnnie Jack Schirtzer paced the Red Storm with an NCAA-leading six caused turnovers. Bobby Seel caused two turnovers and scooped two groundballs in the season opener.
Saturday will mark the first meeting in nearly 18 years, with Delaware playing host in all previous games. The Blue Hens took the most recent matchup, 13-6, on April 30, 2005, in Newark, Del.
Delaware enters the game ranked No. 13 in the country by the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and No. 14 by the USILA Coaches Poll. The Blue Hens picked up their second win of the season against Mount St. Mary's by a score of 15-6 on Wednesday.
Offensively, Tye Kurtz leads the team with eight goals on 22 shots and has chipped in two assists. JP Ward tallied four assists in the win over Mount St. Mary's to pace the Blue Hens in helpers. In net, goalkeeper Matt Kilkeary ranks fourth in the country with 5.5 goals-against average. Kilkeary has racked up 16 saves and ranks third in the conference with a save percentage of 59.3.
Following the matchup in Newark, Del., the Red Storm will return to the Empire State for its home opener against Hofstra on Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.
