St. John’s Drops to No. 19 Stanford, 6-1, No. 13 Georgia, 12-1

Peyton Cody earned her 100th career hit in the second game of the day
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2023) – The St. John's softball team fell to No. 19 Stanford, and No. 13 Georgia, 12-1 on Sunday at Jack Turner Field in the final day of the Red and Black Showcase in Athens, Ga. Graduate student Peyton Cody recorded her 100th career hit in the fifth inning against No. 13 Georgia.
Game 1
After Hannah Mearns retired the first four batters of the game, the Cardinal were able to string together a pair of base runners to have two runners in scoring position with two outs. Emily Schultz legged out a triple to push the first two runs of the game across the plate for No. 19 Stanford.
The Red Storm (1-8) broke through against Stanford's Regan Krause in the bottom of the fourth inning. A lead-off double by London Jarrard followed by a Katie Whittaker single, set runners at the corners for Melanie Santos. Santos laced an RBI single to left field to put the Johnnies on the board. The Red Storm were unable to capitalize with runners on first and second with one out, and stranded both to end the inning.
In the fifth inning, No. 19 Stanford plated two runs on three hits to begin the inning. Ana Serafinko was called out of the pen with one out in the inning. She needed just seven pitches to retire the next two batters and end the inning.
Stanford tacked on two more insurance runs in the sixth inning, and retired the last nine Johnnies in order to seal the 6-1 victory.
Game 2
Cody hit a milestone in the second game of the day. The graduate student laced a single to center for her 100th career hit. In her career, she has registered 36 extra-base hits including 13 home runs, and 74 RBIs.
Unlike yesterday's contest, No. 13 Georgia held control from the get-go. The Bulldogs pushed two runs across in the first inning by stringing together four singles. In the second inning, a pair of home runs led to four runs on four hits for No. 13 Georgia.
Leading 6-0, the Bulldogs added six more insurance runs in the third inning on six hits.
Cassidy Stouffer reached base in the fourth inning for the Red Storm on a hit by pitch, but was stranded at first base.
Cody led off the fifth inning, roping a single up-the-middle to record her 100th career hit. Elanna Lysiak floated a single into the outfield with two outs to plate Cody to score the Johnnies first run of the ballgame. Lysiak was kept at first to give the Bulldogs the 12-1 win.
St. John's will travel for its final five-game road trip of the season to Virginia next weekend. The Red Storm will take on George Washington, Howard and Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., and Longwood and UMES in Farmville, Va.. The Johnnies will open on Friday morning at 10 a.m. against George Washington.
