Women’s Tennis to Open BIG EAST Play Against Villanova

The Red Storm will travel to Texas State next week
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 23, 2023) - The St. John's women's tennis team will host Villanova on Friday at USTA Tennis Center to open BIG EAST play.
After dropping its first three matches to begin the season, the Red Storm found its groove winning the next five matches. The squad hit a bump last weekend with a 6-1 loss at Delaware. Mouna Buzgarrou was the only Johnnie to record a victory, winning in three sets.
Yesica de Lucas (7-2) and Willa Bay Breunich (6-3) lead the Red Storm in singles wins. De Lucas earned BIG EAST Doubles Team of the week earlier in the season with partner Jayden Nielsen. Nielsen has not played the last three matches due to an injury suffered earlier in the season. New doubles pairings of de Lucas and Emilie Haakansson and Breunich and Lalita Devarakonda both have earned two wins each.
The Wildcats have been swept four times to open the season, and enter the match 1-5 n the season. Villanova will face St. John's in its second match of four this week. Earlier in the week, the Wildcats were swept by Penn, 7-0. On Saturday the Wildcats will play a doubleheader in Providence starting with Brown in the morning and Providence later in the afternoon.
The Red Storm lead the Wildcats in the all-time series, 13-2. St. John's was victorious last spring at USTA Tennis Center with a 6-1 win. The Johnnies started out the series winning the first 12 matches against Villanova.
St. John's will travel to San Marcos, Tex. for a Thursday match at Texas State, starting at 2 p.m.
