Women’s Tennis Sweeps Villanova in BIG EAST Opener, 7-0

QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 24, 2023) - The St. John's women's tennis team swept Villanova in the BIG EAST opener, 7-0, at USTA Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
The Red Storm (6-4) opened BIG EAST play with a victory for the third consecutive season.
The Johnnies clinched the doubles point with two short victories, leaving the third match unfinished. The No. 1 duo of Mouna Bouzgarrou and Lalita Deverakonda defeated Valieriia Kornieva and Emma Brogan, 6-1. The tandem earned their third victory of the season in four matches. The tandem of Camila Ordonez and Willa Bay Breunich secured the point with a 6-1 victory against Amanda Rivera-Gonzalez and Bella Steffen.
In singles play, every Johnnie won in straight sets, with four tallying their second victory of the day. Yesica de Lucas notched her team-best eighth win of the season in a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Emi Callahan. At the No. 1 slot, Devarakonda knocked off Emma Brogan 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Breunich improved to 7-3 on the season with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Caitlin Fisher. Bouzgarrou won her second match of the day with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Valieriia Kornieva. Ordonez also notched her second win of the day defeating Amanda Rivera-Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-3. Amaya Lopez tallied a victory in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
St. John's will travel to San Marcos, Tex. for a Thursday match at Texas State, starting at 2 p.m.
