Women’s Tennis Travels to Texas State

The Red Storm swept Villanova in its BIG EAST Opener last week
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 1, 2023) - The St. John's women's tennis team will travel to San Marcos, Texas to take on Texas State on Thursday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Center.
The Red Storm opened BIG EAST play with a victory for the third consecutive season on Friday afternoon at the USTA Tennis Center. Four Johnnies earned a pair of wins on the day. Despite having her doubles match be labeled unfinished, Yesica de Lucas improved her singles record to a team-best 8-2 with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Emi Callahan. Each singles match was decided in straight sets, and both doubles matches that finished were 6-1 victories for the Red Storm.
In doubles play, the new pairing of Mouna Bouzgarrou and Lalita Devarakonda are a flourishing 3-1 since teaming up manning the no. 1 doubles slot. The other new pairing of Emilie Haakansson and Yesica de Lucas are 2-0 since teaming up together. Willa Bay Breunich and Camila Ordonez which have maintained their partnership all year.
In singles play, de Lucas leads the way with an 8-2 overall record. Breunich's 7-3 overall record is the second-best on the team. Bouzgarrou's team-high six match current winning streak has led her to a 6-3 overall record this season.
Head Coach Lauren Leo earned her 100th career-win at the helm of the St. John's Red Storm against Villanova on Friday. Leo is the second head coach in program history to reach the milestone. Sheila Wildermuth owns the program record with 149 total wins in her 10-season career with the Red Storm from 1974-1984.
Texas State enters the match 3-5, after winning its last two games. In their only game last week, the Bobcats edged Northwestern State, 4-3 on Sunday. The previous Sunday, Texas State knocked off Stephen F. Austin at home as well. Thursday will be the fourth of six consecutive home matches for the squad.
Sofia Fortuno touts a three-match win streak which as upped her record to 4-1 on the season. Kate Malazonia and Andrea Pineda are tied with five wins for the team-high in singles.
Thursday will be the first meeting between the Bobcats and the Red Storm in the two programs history.
St. John's will only play Texas State this week, and will return to action with a home match against Radford on March 8 at USTA Tennis Center. The Red Storm will close out the weekend with a road match at Yale on Saturday, March 11.
