Starter Joe Mascio records 10 strikeouts while the Red Storm tallies 10 hits in Saturday’s win
NEW YORK – The St. John's baseball team used a combined 13 strikeouts between Joe Mascio and Nick Cirelli and a six-run sixth inning to topple Tulane, 7-3, on Saturday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Red Storm starter Mascio finished the game with a career-high 10 strikeouts across 4.2 innings of work, becoming the first Johnnie to tally 10 or more punchouts in a game since Nick Mondak posted 10 against Butler on May 14, 2021.
Reliever Nick Cirelli tossed three scoreless innings of relief to pick up the first save of his Division I career. The Martinez, Calif., native punched out three, allowing just one hit and two walks on Saturday.
The Johnnies (3-2) saw David Glancy produce a 2-for-3 day at the dish with two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Jace Jeremiah also tallied a pair of RBIs, going 1-for-3 with a double.
Left fielder Paul Orbon went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored against the Green Wave while third baseman Marty Higgins chipped in two hits of his own. The Nutley, N.J., native also recorded a tally and an RBI.
Six different Johnnies crossed home plate on Saturday night with Jackson Tucker being the lone player to score twice. The sophomore outfielder also extended his reached-base streak to 24 games with a pair of walks.
Mascio and Tulane's Cristian Sanchez engaged in a pitchers' duel over the first three innings, both surrendering just one hit apiece over that stretch. The Johnnies' starter struck out seven of the first 10 batters he faced, including all three in the third frame.
After a blank top of the fourth, Tulane (0-6) broke through in the home half as Jackson Linn hit a three-run homer to right-center, taking a 3-0 lead.
Following an empty top of the fifth, St. John's staved off a Green Wave threat in the bottom half. With runners on the corners and two outs, Tommy Finnegan came on in relief and forced Brady Marget to fly out to Glancy in deep left-center. The freshman hurler finished his 1.1 innings of work with one strikeout and allowed just two hits.
The Johnnies chased Sanchez in the sixth with a six-run frame. Glancy smacked a 1-1 pitch up the middle to bring the Orbon around to score, 3-1. St. John's tied the game at three with a bases-loaded walk to Aaron Mann and an Austin Machado sacrifice fly to left. Higgins continued the onslaught with a looping single over the second baseman's head for the Johnnies' first lead, 4-3, scoring Kevin Michaels from third. Jeremiah capped off the inning with a double down the left-field line, clearing the bases and giving St. John's a three-run edge, 6-3.
The Red Storm added an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI double from Glancy, plating Tucker and taking a 7-3 lead. Tulane's Billy Price came on in relief and shut down the Johnnies from that point forward, allowing just two hits and striking out four in three innings of action.
Cirelli countered with a scoreless seventh of his own and worked himself out of a jam in the eighth to keep the Johnnies ahead by four. The two-way player finished off his three-inning save with a 6-3 double play and his third strikeout to shut the door on the Green Wave.
St. John's held the home team to just four runners in scoring position, allowing only one of them to score.
The Johnnies will look to sweep the series against Tulane on Sunday with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. from New Orleans.
