Red Storm to play three matches against Butler, DePaul and UConn
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's men's golf team will begin its spring season on Monday, when it competes in the two-day BIG EAST Match Play event.
The Red Storm will play three matches against league foes- Butler, DePaul and UConn at Bear Lakes Country Club, a 7,200 yard, par-72 track in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Live results will be available over the entire competition on GolfStat.
Bear Lakes Country Club will host the conference event for the second-straight year. Last season, the Johnnies finished in fourth at the event, after battling with Seton Hall, Creighton and Butler. Tyler Gerbavsits logged a tie in all three of his matches at last year's competition.
Under first-year Head Coach Phil Wildermuth, St. John's enters the spring campaign on the heels of a decorated fall. The squad recorded three consecutive team titles at the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse, Lehigh Invitational and Nassau Invitational hosted by LIU. Additionally, the Red Storm logged a second place finish at its home event, The Doc Gimmler.
The Johnnies boast an experienced roster and returned all eight players from last year's roster, while adding Monmouth transfer Brendan Smith. Fifth-year player Gerbavsits and sophomore Peicheng Chen paced the squad in the fall, each earning individual titles. Gerbavsits helped the Red Storm capture its second-straight Nassau Invitational recording a tournament-best 2-under par on Oct. 24-25. Chen finished atop the field at the MacDonald Cup, hosted by Yale, posting a score of 9-under par over 54 holes on Sept. 24-25.
